Water, tidal flats, marshland, moorland and geest shape the natural landscape of the Elbe-Weser Triangle. The region is also home to more than 100 museums and museum collections; this number may change over time. It stretches from Cuxhaven in the north to Verden in the south, and from Bremerhaven in the west to Buxtehude in the east. You can choose from a range of themes to plan your trip: art and local history, historic buildings, train journeys and nature trails. First consider which places and experiences you want to shape your stay, then plan the rest of your trip accordingly.

Explore by Moorexpress

The historic Moorexpress offers more than 20 stops where you can visit attractions and get to know the region. It makes for varied excursions between the artists’ village of Worpswede, moorland, geest and the historic Hanseatic town of Stade. In the 2026 season, the Moorexpress runs with an additional bicycle car that can carry 25 bikes. Before travelling, check whether this feature is available and consult the timetable.

Art and history in Worpswede and Zeven

An artists’ colony was established in Worpswede in 1889; today, there are six museums there, though this number may change. Guided walks trace the town’s development from a farming village in the Teufelsmoor to an artists’ colony, followed by a group visit to an art exhibition in a museum. It is worth checking the available dates for these tours in advance. The two museum figures refer to different levels: the region has more than 100 museums and museum collections, while Worpswede has six museums. For a specific visit, the local selection is the more practical starting point.

The Kloster Zeven Museum is the last surviving building of the medieval monastery complex, next to the former Romanesque monastery church of St. Viti. St. Viti Church was built between 1141 and around 1158 in the Romanesque style, with a cruciform layout. The museum displays a coin hoard from Heeslingen dating back around 500 years; the display may change due to loans or rearrangements. The Königin-Christinen-Haus is now home to the Municipal Gallery, which presents changing art exhibitions.

Buildings, exhibitions and nature trails

The suspension ferry between Osten and Basbeck, a district of Hemmoor, began operating in 1909 and is the most distinctive structure in the Elbe-Weser Triangle. The Natureum Niederelbe presents interactive exhibitions in two buildings and in the Elbe Coastal Park. Individual exhibitions may change.
