Freren: Saller See, Holtpättken and Culture
Accommodation in Freren
Discover Freren through its different highlights: nature and outdoor activities at Saller See, insights into the forest, and places connected with local history and culture. If you are planning a hotel stay in Freren, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip.
Nature and outdoor activities at Saller See
Saller See is surrounded by green meadows and forests. There are numerous paths around the lake for cyclists and hikers. Facilities at the lake also include a Kneipp water-treading pool, a miniature golf course, and picnic areas. This means there are both routes for getting active and places to take a break outdoors.
The Southern Emsland Nordic Fitness and Skiking Park is also located at Saller See and features seven signposted routes. Its distinctive feature is the combination of inline skating and cross-country skiing, which offers a winter sports feel even in summer. If you are looking for another sporting activity, you can try biathlon in the park using an ammunition-free laser shooting system. The various activities differ considerably: alongside cycling and hiking trails, there are signposted routes and this special biathlon experience.
Discover the forest and landscape
The Holtpättken forest discovery trail has themes for both children and adults. Along the way, visitors learn about how the landscape was formed, people’s work in the forest, the trees, and the wildlife. Nature observation and information about how the forest is used thus go hand in hand. Audio features accessed via QR codes add short Low German texts and stories about Holtpättken to the trail. Those interested in regional languages will therefore find a cultural dimension here alongside the themes of forest and landscape.
Local history and culture
The Fridurenpatt circular trail traces Freren’s development from the medieval market town of “Friduren” to the city it is today. The route puts the town’s history at its heart. For another glimpse into local craftsmanship, visit Heimathaus Freren: its renovated outbuilding houses a craft museum.
The Alte Molkerei cultural center is home to the permanent exhibition “Lebenswege,” housed in the historic buildings of the former Brüne dairy, as well as the Samuel Manne Jewish History Workshop. The Alte Molkerei’s program includes theater, concerts, seminars, flea markets, cultural breakfasts, jazz brunches, and arts and crafts markets. The Kulturkreis impulse Samtgemeinde Freren e.V. organizes more than 50 events there each year. If you have a particular date in mind, check the latest event listings.
Gut Hange moated castle is another of Freren’s cultural destinations: it is a listed cultural monument and a place to visit on an outing. Together, these places offer various ways to explore the town’s history and cultural life—from a circular trail and exhibitions to an events program.
