Herzlake brings together several interests for travelers: the Hahnenmoor is all about moorland and wildlife observation, while trails and the River Hase offer opportunities for outdoor activities. Historic sites also shape the area’s character: St. Nicholas Church, Aseburg, the Kanonenberge burial ground, and the Aselager Mill. Which of these aspects interests you most can help determine the focus of your trip and your search for a hotel in Herzlake.

Hahnenmoor and Trails

The Hahnenmoor nature reserve lies between Herzlake and Grafeld and covers around 620 hectares. The observation platform is right on the HĂĽnenweg long-distance hiking trail and can be reached from the Hahnenmoor Peat Works information center. Hahnenmoor is accessible at all times; check local notices for temporary closures. Check route and platform information locally before setting out.

Cycling and hiking trails are also part of the nature experience: the Herzlake Joint Municipality has a well-developed network for both activities. This lets you plan your visit around trails or specifically around the Hahnenmoor viewpoint, without treating them as the same excursion.

The River Hase and Canoe Launch

The River Hase is free of motorized boat traffic. The route to the Herzlake canoe launch starts at the motorhome parking area: after crossing the Hase from the direction of Dohren, follow the “Boat Landing” sign. As the canoe map is older, check the signs and parking situation locally. This lets you compare the route with current conditions before planning your trip.

Historic Sites

St. Nicholas Church is about 700 years old. Aseburg is an early medieval fortification associated with Herzlake’s history. The Kanonenberge burial ground is one of Herzlake’s historic attractions. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the area’s history—from sacred architecture to a fortification and a burial ground.

The Aselager Mill marks another point in history: this cap-style windmill dates back to 1860. It can be viewed from the outside at any time, subject to local access conditions.

The Hahnenmoor Peat Works adds the history of the Hahnenmoor to these themes. It has an exhibition on the subject, and parts of the historic production facilities have been preserved. Guided tours are available; check their availability before visiting.

The Emsland in a Wider Context

The Emsland offers further regional context as a broader travel destination. HĂĽmmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometers in the northeastern part of Emsland District. Cycling and hiking trails run through the park, with information stations along the way, passing historic sites, megalithic tombs, and Clemenswerth Baroque Palace.

The 395-kilometer Emsland Route offers a broader perspective. This circular route passes through five landscape areas: Northern Ems Valley, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal, and Southern Emsland. It connects 19 towns; any town in the Emsland along the route can serve as a starting point or destination. These regional tours and landscapes are part of the Emsland as a broader travel destination, not among Herzlake’s individual attractions.
