Art, city history and collections
The Kunsthalle Lingen preserves, looks after and presents part of Harry Kramer’s estate. The artist was born in Lingen in 1925 and took part in documenta III in Kassel in 1964. His biography thus connects Lingen with a major art exhibition in Kassel.
The Emslandmuseum’s permanent exhibition presents the history of the city of Lingen and the southern Emsland region from the Middle Ages through to the Second World War. One of its special collection focuses is the throne treasure of the Lingener Kivelinge, which includes royal chains dating back five centuries.
In the former coach house of Palais Danckelmann, the Emslandmuseum presents Emsland building and living culture. The half-timbered house, dating from 1728, contains a typical bedroom with an original Butze, or bed cupboard, as well as a Baroque room, an 18th-century bourgeois room and a Biedermeier-era living room. The different rooms offer a tangible counterpart to the permanent exhibition, which covers a broader span of time.
The Kunst- und Kulturvilla at Wilhelmstraße 49 is an exhibition venue for the city’s historical and cultural collections. These include paintings from the municipal art collection, books from the Georgianum’s Baroque library, old photographs, a work of art by Harry Kramer and historical toys from the former Adelmann shop. Together with the Kunsthalle and Emslandmuseum, it offers a range of different collection and exhibition themes.
City activities and recreation
Children aged eight and over can take part in the Emslandmuseum’s city game, deciphering secret codes that reveal their next destination in the city centre. The 2026 Lingen City Experience programme also includes a Kids Safari, where children can explore the city centre on their own. In the city game, puzzles lead to the next destination; the safari focuses on independent exploration. The Kids Safari is specifically part of the 2026 programme.
Lingen Wirtschaft + Tourismus GmbH offers a wide range of guided city tours that provide insights into Lingen’s history. The Tourist Info at Neue Straße 3a is the starting point for the tours described here. Tickets for the guided tours in the 2026 city tour programme are available there. Check the latest tour dates and ticket information before planning.
The Linus Lingen leisure pool offers another way to spend your free time. Its water area covers more than 1,000 square metres; attractions include the Brodelberg, a current channel and the more than 100-metre-long Black Hole slide.
