Looking for a hotel in Niederlangen and would like to get an idea in advance of what makes the town an appealing destination? Moorland landscapes, wildlife watching, cycling and historic sites offer different starting points for planning your trip. Which of these matters to you depends on whether you prefer to explore on foot, travel further afield by bike, or focus on culture and local history.

Moorland Landscape and Nature

The larger Niederlangen-Siedlung area developed in the Bourtanger Moor. The eastern part of Niederlangen, the old farming area, lies within the Ems glacial valley. Another natural setting is the Kapellenmoorgraben: the landscape covers about 50 hectares and is a habitat for endangered animals and plants. The Kapellenmoorgraben nature reserve is also a great place for walks and hikes; its diverse flora and fauna are part of the nature experience. These landscape features give the town a character that is particularly well suited to planning a trip focused on nature and outdoor activities.

Walking Around the Kapellenmoorgraben

The easy “Kapellenmoor – Hümmling Trails” circular route is 6.5 kilometres long and starts at the Kapellenmoorgraben observation tower in Niederlangen. Eleven information boards and five experience stations line the route. These include an observation tower and a wildlife-watching station. The loop combines a set walking distance with various opportunities to observe nature and learn about the surrounding area.

The shelter at the Kapellenmoorgraben is open at all times; parking is directly opposite. As route details and practical access information can change, it is best to check them before setting out. The 6.5-kilometre loop gives you a specific framework for planning your day.

Cycle Routes and Other Destinations

There are several options for cyclists, too. The “Ross und Rad” route passes the Kapellenmoorgraben nature viewpoint near Niederlangen. Another cycle route runs from Niederlangen through Sustrum to the Düthe lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal, then continues along the canal route towards Lathen. These descriptions cover different types of cycling trips: one route passes a nature viewpoint, while the other leads to a lock and continues along the canal. Check the current route before setting out on a cycling trip.

Local History and Special Visits

Niederlangen was first mentioned around the year 1000 in the oldest surviving tax registers of Corvey Abbey. A later historical landmark is the Alte Schmiede, dating from 1789 and still in use. If you plan to visit, check access arrangements in advance.

Visits to the doll museum can be booked at the Bürgerhaus Alte Schule, Schulstraße 1, Niederlangen. It is best to confirm booking and visiting details before your trip. Another local highlight is the Terhorst mill shop, which offers nearly 200 spices, herbs and blends made in-house. As the product selection can change, it is a good idea to check the current range before planning a visit.

Hiking in the Wider Emsland Destination

In the wider Emsland destination, Hümmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometres in the northeast of the district. Cycle paths and hiking trails pass historic sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Palace, with information stations along the way. The Theikenmeer Loop is one of the nature park’s trails that meets the quality criteria of the German Hiking Association.

The Crane Trail to the Theikenmeer nature reserve is also in Emsland. The outward leg is about 2.5 kilometres; the same route is used to return, making the total walking distance approximately 5 kilometres. This is a different type of route from the 6.5-kilometre circular walk at the Kapellenmoorgraben in Niederlangen. At approximately 5 kilometres in total, the Crane Trail is shorter than the 6.5-kilometre circular walk at the Kapellenmoorgraben.
