Spelle is located in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony, around 20 kilometres southeast of Lingen and 10 kilometres north of Rheine. The three municipalities of the Spelle collective municipality are presented as a cycling-oriented destination. You can plan your stay around a range of themes: cycling, seasonal customs, architectural history, museums and moorland.

Cycling and seasonal activities

The cycling network of the Spelle collective municipality is connected to the Emsland Route and the Dortmund–Ems Canal Route. The collective municipality also uses a signposted junction system to help you find your way. The three-stage “Fascination Southern Emsland” circular route also passes through Spelle. Check the current route before setting out, as regional route details may change.

In the cold season, Boßeln adds a different kind of activity: cycle paths and footpaths serve as playing lanes. Boßeln combines walking, fitness and leisure, making it different from cycling, which the collective municipality highlights as a year-round travel theme. At the end of a Boßeln tour, the inns associated with the tour serve a traditional kale meal. This dining tradition is seasonal; the availability of individual offerings may change.

The inns also offer a range of food beyond Boßeln tours, from homemade cakes to fine dining and traditional dishes. The food offered by an individual establishment depends on its menu; establishments and menus may change.

Group activities and brewery tours

The collective municipality’s group programmes include “Buurnhochtied” and “Töddenspiele”. The tourist offering also includes brewery tours. Dates for group programmes may change; confirm the availability of a brewery tour before your visit.

Farms, museums and history

The main building of the Wöhlehof was built in 1791 in the style of a Lower Saxon farmhouse. The Wöhlehof is the last surviving half-timbered farmhouse in the municipality of Spelle. Its construction date and architectural style give it a clearly defined historical character.

The Hölscherhof Museum Barn is housed in former farm barns built in 1943, which were converted into a museum. Its exhibition features agricultural tools and machinery from the Spelle area. The Hölscherhof therefore focuses on historic farming and its equipment, while the Wöhlehof is described primarily as a traditional half-timbered farmhouse.

Venhaus Castle Park is located on the site of a former moated castle; today, the Catholic Church of St Vitus stands there. The park is also an interactive environmental education garden. The KRONE Museum is devoted to the history of the KRONE family and company: its development spans from a small blacksmith’s workshop to a global manufacturer of agricultural machinery and commercial vehicles. Guided tours for groups are available outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement. Check the current booking conditions in advance.

The Speller Dose

The Speller Dose is a raised bog covering around 57 hectares that has been rewetted and successfully renaturalised. This landscape theme differs from the architectural and museum topics: here, the focus is on the bog and its restoration, while the Wöhlehof centres on historic architecture and the Museum Barn on agricultural tools and machinery. You can therefore shape your stay around the subject that interests you most.
