Werlte combines a nature park landscape with specific historic sites. During your stay, you can choose between trails by water and moorland, religious buildings and a mill with seasonal visiting hours to focus on different interests. Werlte is located in HĂĽmmling Nature Park. Nearby Theikenmeer features a landscape of open water, wet meadows and raised bog areas.

Nature and trails at Theikenmeer

Theikenmeer and the adjacent moor meadows form a 290-hectare protected area between Werlte and Sögel. In addition to water and wet meadows, the area includes raised bog; it provides a habitat for numerous waterbirds. If you would like to explore the landscape on a circular trail, you can access the Theikenmeer Loop from the Theikenmeer Nature and Geopark Station. The interpretive hiking trail includes an observation tower and viewing platforms. This lets you combine the trail with information about the landscape and designated viewpoints.

The station also features the accessible “Nature-Time-People” exhibition. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check the latest operating information in advance. You can also get a better sense of the protected landscape by distinguishing its different habitats: open water, wet meadows and raised bog are distinct parts of the Theikenmeer area, not a single, uniform landscape.

Hermann-Droste Park has around 350 metres of footpaths and benches for resting. Its manageable path length and available seating give the park a different character from the Theikenmeer Loop, with its viewpoints and information. When planning, you can decide whether you would rather focus on a short visit to the park or a nature trail with several stops.

History and distinctive buildings

The De hoogen Stainer megalithic tomb lies 3 km north of Werlte and dates back to the Neolithic period. It is considered the earliest evidence of settlement in the area. St. Sixtus Church offers another glimpse into local history: it was first mentioned in a document in 1100 and rebuilt in 1947 after its destruction in 1945. The church contains a baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone dating from 1130 and a chancel mosaic from 1979. The mosaic depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation.

The dates bring the church’s different historical layers to life: its first documented mention, the age of the baptismal font, its reconstruction after wartime destruction and the more recent mosaic. If you are interested in religious art, the mosaic’s subject offers a particularly tangible point of interest; the church’s architectural history and furnishings can be explored through works from different periods.

Kreutzmann’s Mill adds an engineering landmark to these historic sites. In the 1990s, it was restored to its original 1881 condition. Visits are possible from April to October on Saturdays from 09:00 to 11:00; additional visits can be arranged by appointment. Check the hours in advance if you plan to visit the mill.

Different ways to shape your stay

The Hümmling Pilgrimage Route has its own distinctive feature: its trail markers are erratic boulders fitted with stainless-steel crosses and directional arrows. This offers a different way to experience the landscape from the Theikenmeer Loop, which combines information and viewpoints. If you prefer to visit historic buildings, you can focus on the church and Kreutzmann’s Mill; if you are interested in nature, Theikenmeer offers several different habitats. These options can help you plan your days around the topics that interest you.
