Emmen’s history, the Rentelmann Mill and village traditions are central to understanding the village as a place to stay. Its stories range from early historic house finds to recurring festivals, alongside two different cycling route connections and a local food offering. This gives you a way to consider whether cultural heritage, an event date, cycling or direct sales should be the focus of your trip.

History of House Finds and the Mill

Early historic houses dating from the 7th century AD were discovered in Emmen. The Rentelmann Mill was first mentioned in a document in 1225. It is the only functioning mill in the HankensbĂĽttel collective municipality and is considered the oldest in the eastern Lower Saxony region. Its waterwheel is regarded as a landmark of Emmen. These descriptions refer to different areas: its functioning status applies to the collective municipality, while its age applies to the eastern Lower Saxony region.

A bronze cooking pot was found in 1994 during excavation work at the millpond of the so-called Rentelmann Watermill. The early historic houses, the documented mention in 1225 and the 1994 find thus stand as three distinct historical points of reference.

Festivals and Cycling Routes

Emmen’s annual marksmen’s festival takes place on the first Friday in June; check the date before your trip. Traditional Christmas dancing at a village inn is also part of local customs. The two events differ in season and form: a fixed date in early summer and a dance tradition at Christmas.

For cyclists, it is useful to distinguish between two route connections. The “On the Trail of Oil” cycle tour runs from Hankensbüttel via Emmen and Oerrel and back to Hankensbüttel. In addition, the secondary route of the Weser-Harz-Heide Cycle Route is listed in Emmen on Emner Dorfstraße. This is a helpful distinction when choosing a route: the oil tour specifies a sequence of places with a return to Hankensbüttel, while the secondary route is associated with Emmen through its listing on Emner Dorfstraße.
