Nature, trails and local history offer different ways to get to know Wesendorf. The Bültenmoor, several named landscape areas and the townscape each have their own features. Before visiting trails and individual facilities, check the applicable conditions.

Nature and landscape in Wesendorf

Lake Wesendorfer See lies in the Bültenmoor. The landscape around the lake includes old pedunculate oaks, alder carr woodland, Märchenwiese and heathland. These areas bring together different landscape features: trees, wet woodland, meadows and heath.

The Fuchsberg and Karls Ruhe areas also feature pine and heathland landscapes. A former peat extraction site and a bog myrtle meadow add to the landscape features. The former peat extraction is explicitly part of the local history of this site.

The Wesendorf area of German National Natural Heritage includes a former military training ground between the K7 and B4 roads. It supports rare flora and fauna; its natural features include dry grassland and insects. Wesendorf therefore has a number of different landscape features, from the Bültenmoor to its pine and heathland areas.

Cycling and walking routes and other activities

Wesendorf has cycling and walking routes with seating, as well as rest areas at viewpoints. Themed routes around the town also offer opportunities for recreational cycling. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between cycling and walking routes and themed routes for cyclists. Check the routes and signage before setting out.

The walking and discovery route at the DBU Wesendorf site is on a former military training ground. If you plan to take this route, check access and trail conditions in advance. There is also an archery range in the eastern part of Hammerstein Park; check the current access and operating rules before visiting.

The Heidelandstadion complex includes athletics facilities, a skate park, a beach volleyball court and a multi-purpose court. Before visiting, check the local access rules for the facilities. This helps you plan around your chosen activity without treating the different facilities as interchangeable.

Horst has a modern barbecue area with a playground, a fishpond and a toboggan run. Local access conditions may change; check the current rules before visiting.

Townscape and traces of history

A historic oil pump dating from around 1950 stands near the central roundabout. Traditional half-timbered houses and farmsteads can be found along Celler Straße, Kastanienallee, Schulstraße and Bültenmoor. Together, a single piece of industrial heritage and buildings on several streets add to the picture of local history.

Wesendorf’s “Old Village” includes a restored, paved chestnut avenue and prominent oak trees. Together with the half-timbered houses and farmsteads, these places offer different points of reference for local history: industrial history, traditional architecture and a renewed avenue lined with old trees.
