Bovenden combines cultural attractions with forest and hiking destinations. When choosing a hotel in Bovenden, it helps to start with your own travel interests: Plesse Castle offers history and views, while Plesse Forest, Lohberg, and Hainberg provide natural surroundings and hiking opportunities. Generationenpark and the market complement these highlights with activities and regional and international specialties.

Plesse Castle: History and Views

Plesse Castle was first mentioned in official records in 1015 and is considered one of the most significant hilltop castles in southern Lower Saxony. As you walk through the castle courtyard, you can see remains of the former chapel and manor house. The keep has walls four meters thick—a striking architectural feature of the castle.

From the battlements of the keep, the view extends across the Leine Valley, the Solling hills, and the Harz Mountains. The Great Tower also offers a panorama. At Eichsfeld and Goethelinde, you can enjoy further views across the Leine Valley. The castle grounds are open year-round; check the opening conditions before your visit.

Forest and Hiking Trails

Plesse Forest has an extensive network of walking and hiking trails. Well-maintained paths lead from the castle parking lot through the surrounding woodland; the forested area is also suitable for longer walks. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the castle courtyard with time outdoors.

At Lohberg, benches offer views of the old village of Bovenden and the Leine Valley. The area also has extensive hiking trails. The yew forest on the southwestern slope of Hainberg is the largest contiguous stand of yew trees in the Federal Republic of Germany. The yew forest reserve at Plesse Castle is home to trees more than 170 years old. The prehistoric HĂĽnstollen rampart, with its observation tower, is also a hiking destination. The Bielstein circular hiking trail leads from Mariaspring through a rugged gorge to the large sandstone cliffs at Bielstein.

Generationenpark and the Market

Generationenpark is located in Wurzelbruch Park. It has fitness equipment for endurance, strength, and mobility, as well as a sandstone climbing wall for children. This activity-focused attraction complements Bovenden’s cultural and hiking destinations.

Getting There and Göttingen as a Separate Destination

Bovenden has a city bus connection to Göttingen and nearby motorway access. Train connections are available in Göttingen, Northeim, and Nörten-Hardenberg. Before travelling, check current bus services, train options, and road conditions; routes, connections, and road conditions may change.

Göttingen is a destination in its own right and should not be confused with Bovenden. In the wider Göttingen destination area, Forum Wissen offers insights into ongoing research and teaching. Its permanent exhibition, “Spaces of Knowledge,” covers 1,400 square meters and makes the processes through which knowledge is created accessible; its twelve rooms contain more than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen. Göttingen’s Old Botanical Garden was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus,” or medicinal garden. There, you can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house, and the Alpine garden.
