Gieboldehausen: Castle, Churches and Culture
The town brings together castle history and half-timbered architecture, two churches with different architectural styles, music events, a seasonal nativity scene and a family cycling tour. You can plan your stay around your interests, whether you’re more interested in architectural history, an event or a tour.
Castle History and Cultural Use
Gieboldehausen Castle is a late-medieval Renaissance landmark built using half-timbered construction, and it has a castle park. It was built in 1510 by Hans von Minnigerode, known as “the Roman,” on the remains of a destroyed moated castle. Today the castle belongs to the municipality of Gieboldehausen and is used as a registry office and for various cultural purposes. Readings, concerts and theatrical performances take place in the hall. If you’re planning to attend an event at the castle, check the date and access arrangements in advance. This lets you distinguish the building’s historic past from its current use without assuming it is open to visitors at all times.
Churches, Architectural Styles and Music
The Gustav Adolf Church was built in 1877 in the Neo-Gothic style. It hosts organ concerts, choir concerts, concerts by the flute group and Advent singing events. Dates may vary, so check the program if you’re planning to attend a concert. The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius offers a different architectural accent: it is a Baroque sandstone building with preserved Gothic features. Its Baroque high altar dates from 1754. According to tradition, an early medieval castle belonging to Count Biso originally stood on the site and was converted into a church in the 9th century. Every year from December 24 to the end of January, one of the largest and most elaborate Christmas nativity scenes in the Eichsfeld is on display at St. Laurentius. If you’re planning your trip around the nativity scene, take this period into account and check the dates in advance. The Neo-Gothic Gustav Adolf Church and the Baroque-style St. Laurentius Church thus offer different architectural themes.
Other Historic Landmarks
In addition to the churches and the castle, smaller monuments have their own local significance. Beside the Hahle Bridge stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. A wayside shrine dating from 1622 is located on ObertorstraĂźe. The Kleiner Lohberg lies northwest of Gieboldehausen. Bronze Age burial mounds there point to earlier settlement in the Untereichsfeld. This historical perspective spans individual monuments in the town and evidence of earlier settlement in the region.
Explore Gieboldehausen by Bike
The family cycling tour “EYE OF THE EICHSFELD” is a specific route option. It starts in 1,000-year-old Gieboldehausen, leads to Lake Seeburg, and returns to Gieboldehausen via the pilgrimage site of Germershausen and the Hahle Valley. This gives the route a different focus from a visit centered mainly on the buildings and churches: it takes in several specifically named destinations and returns to its starting point. If cycling is important to your travel plans, you can make this tour a focus alongside the cultural attractions.
Göttingen as a Wider Travel Destination
The wider destination of Göttingen also offers its own attractions if you’d like to add a city visit to your travel plans. At the Forum Wissen, the 1,400-square-meter permanent exhibition “Spaces of Knowledge” lets visitors explore the processes involved in the creation of knowledge. Its twelve rooms contain more than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen. The Göttingen Municipal Museum is showing the exhibition “City. Power. Faith. Göttingen in the 16th Century” until further notice; check the exhibition information before your trip. The Old Botanical Garden Göttingen was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus,” or medicinal garden. Visitors can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the alpine garden.
