Hann.Münden combines historic buildings with places along the Werra, Fulda and Weser rivers. The time involved is also a useful distinction when planning your trip: the historic town walk takes you from the town hall to the Weserstein after a short stroll; it takes about 30 minutes to walk from the Old Town to Tillyschanze.

Town history in its church, town hall and castle

St. Blasius Church houses a 1392 bronze baptismal font, a medieval winged altarpiece, a fresco dating from 1519 and the tomb of Duke William the Younger. Seasonal opening hours are listed as daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., from May until Thanksgiving. Check these hours before your visit to make sure they fit your travel dates.

The historic town hall is one of the most significant buildings of the Weser Renaissance. It is also the starting point for the historic town walk, which ends at the Weserstein, where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet, after a short stroll. This makes it easy to combine a historic building with a walk to a distinctive spot by the rivers.

Two Renaissance rooms with wall paintings covering their entire surfaces have been preserved in Welfenschloss. The Municipal Museum in the castle displays exhibits on the town’s history and long-distance trade by land and water. Please note that the historic rooms can only be visited as part of a guided town tour; a visiting time is listed for Fridays at 2:30 p.m. from May to October. Check access and tour times before your trip.

Another historic site is the house where Doctor Eisenbart died, at Lange Straße 79. The former “Zum Wilden Mann” inn is the house where he died in Hann.Münden on November 11, 1727.

The weekly market is held in the historic Old Town, in the market square in front of the town hall. The stalls offer, among other things, fruit and vegetables, meat and sausages, cheese, baked goods, fish and honey, as well as other foods and products. As the schedule and range of goods may change, it is worth checking before your visit.

Weserstein, landing stage and viewpoints

The Fulda and Werra meet at the Weserstein and form the Weser. The site is just a few minutes’ walk from the Old Town and is also the destination of the historic town walk. The Weserstein is therefore a useful landmark if you want to combine local history with a walk to the riverbank.

Water sports enthusiasts will find a shared landing stage for the Werra, Fulda and Weser at Unterer Tanzwerder, with a large canoe slide. It is at the end of the Fulda on the island’s western bank, immediately north of the suspension bridge. The Old Town is a five-minute walk from there.

Tillyschanze is a 25-metre-high observation tower on the edge of the Reinhardswald forest. From there, you can look out over the Old Town and the three rivers. The walk from the historic Old Town takes about 30 minutes. Another hiking option is Blümer Berg, part of the Münden municipal forest; the hiking area is close to the town of Münden. The observation tower and hiking area offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors during your stay.
