The options range from hiking trails and viewpoints to nature and cultural themes. You can consider whether you would mainly like to explore the landscape, learn more about forests and wildlife on a nature trail, or discover local history.

Nature and Viewpoints in Wolfshagen im Harz

Themed trail “Spur der Steine” is about five kilometers long and loops around a former diabase quarry that has been restored and is now a large biotope. The 47-meter-high feature known as the Brutfelsen stands in the quarry, surrounded by small ponds fed by a spring. The Fossecken viewing platform is also on the trail around the former quarry. If you are interested in the landscape and its former use, you will find several connected local features here: the circular trail, the restored quarry and the striking rock formation.

The viewpoints offer different views. The “Steile Wiese” observation pavilion offers views of the southern landscape conservation area. From the Schäder pavilion, the panoramic view stretches across Wolfshagen; the “Wolfshäger Panoramablick” is a worthwhile detour, with views of the village and surrounding mountains. The Kuhlager adds another natural feature: the oak grove is several hundred years old and is protected. The Schäder spring is fed by clear mountain water.

Choose Trails by Length and Theme

For a shorter loop, the 3.5-kilometer “Rund um Burghagen” nature trail is an option; it is especially recommended for children. The Wolfshagen nature trail has a different focus: it passes grazing areas and uses information boards to teach visitors about forest wildlife and trees. It also features a large insect hotel, forest information with photos of native animals, and display cases with nesting boxes. The trail starts and ends at the parking lot at Jahnskamp.

Easy circular hiking trail 2 is 6.2 kilometers long and passes viewpoints and grazing areas around Wolfshagen. Circular hiking trail 3 focuses on the scenery: it leads through gently rolling hills, past viewpoints and meadows. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether you are looking for an informative nature trail or a loop through the surrounding landscape. Other nature experiences mentioned include witch-herb walks and guided night hikes.

Cycling and Events

There are also options for mountain bikers: from Wolfshagen, they can use 74 routes in the “Volksbank Arena Harz.” As information about the route network may change, it is advisable to check the details before setting out. The Wolfshagen Tourist Information Office offers specialist cycling and hiking maps, as well as E-MTB rentals. Check before your visit whether rentals are available during your travel dates.
