Eyendorf combines a rural setting with glimpses into the history of the village. The municipality lies near the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve and Europe’s largest contiguous heathland areas. The surroundings offer a peaceful setting for relaxing and nature-focused holidays. If you are looking for a hotel in Eyendorf, the windmill, open countryside and regional excursion options can help you choose the right destination for your stay.

Eyendorf Meadow Trail and Windmill

The Eyendorf Meadow Trail is marked with red arrows. Check the markings before setting out. Along the trail, you can also view the Dutch-style windmill. The Eyendorf Windmill is operational and used as a museum mill. It was built in 1897 and extensively renovated in 2019. From the windmill, the view stretches across open fields to Garlstorf Forest—an opportunity to take in the historic structure and the landscape together.

Visits to the museum mill are subject to local arrangements. The windmill is also an official branch of the Salzhausen Registry Office for wedding ceremonies; arrangements are required. In addition to its technical and museum significance, the structure therefore has a special role in ceremonies. If a visit or wedding ceremony is important to your plans, make the necessary arrangements in advance.

Further traces of local history

The Old Water Tower also tells the story of earlier infrastructure: it was in operation from 1913 to 1960. An inscription on the tower commemorates the centenary of the Wars of Liberation. The Eyendorf memorial was erected in 1924 and commemorates those killed or missing in the major wars. The windmill, water tower and memorial represent different chapters in the village’s history; their dates help distinguish them chronologically.

Rural landscape and nature

The landscape cannot be described from a single viewpoint alone. From the windmill, you can see across open fields towards Garlstorf Forest; the beech forests of Garlstorf Forest and Toppenstedt Forest are part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Together with the proximity of the Lüneburg Heath, this gives the area a regional connection to nature that is relevant to a stay focused on recreation and the landscape. These forests and protected areas form the broader setting for the surrounding area.

The wider travel destination of Harburg

If you extend your travel plans beyond Eyendorf to the wider travel destination of Harburg, you will find further opportunities to explore the landscape and enjoy outdoor activities. A dense network of tourist cycling routes runs through Harburg district, with 1,000 kilometres of signposted cycle paths. Opened in 2012, the Heidschnuckenweg trail runs for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle districts and across more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the North and South Heath. Its 13 stages are complemented by twelve Heide loops ranging from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres in length. These regional options are part of the wider Harburg area and should not be confused with the Eyendorf Meadow Trail.
