The Hollstegegraben stream flows right through Otter and shapes the town’s landscape. In the town center, a replica of the Historic Milking Bench recalls times gone by. The Otter Pipe Club built it for this purpose in 2016. The landscape and this reminder of the past offer two different perspectives on the town.

Cycling routes, rest stop and local amenities

The northern route of the Wümme Cycle Route passes through Otter and by the cycling rest stop on Kiebitzmoor road. The Wümme Cycle Route is 127 kilometers long in total. The “Through Moors and Fields to the Sheepfold” cycling route also passes the same rest stop. This means there are two named cycling routes with a shared point of reference in Otter. The 127 kilometers describe the full length of the Wümme Cycle Route; the rest stop marks a specific point along both routes. When planning your ride, it helps to distinguish between the total route length and local points of reference. At the rest stop, by the stream, stands Oddo, a large otter figure carved from wood. Right next to the rest stop is Kiebitzpark, which offers sweeping views of the stream landscape.

The Schünhoff village shop adds a practical place to stock up to the area’s tourist attractions. It sells everyday essentials, baked goods, filled rolls and a range of magazines. Baked goods and filled rolls are also available on Sundays. This is useful for planning if you are specifically looking for baked goods or a filled roll during your visit. Individual offerings may change; check in advance if you need to know what is currently available.

Harburg as a wider travel destination

The wider Harburg travel destination encompasses a variety of landscapes across the district, including the Elbe marshes, the Harburg Hills, the North Heath and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. A dense network of cycling routes crosses the district, including 1,000 kilometers of signposted tourist cycling routes. The 1,000 kilometers describe the regional network, while the 127 kilometers of the Wümme Cycle Route refer to the length of a single route. As a hiking option, the Heidschnuckenweg, which opened in 2012, runs for 223 kilometers from Hamburg through the districts of Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle, as well as through more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the North and South Heath. The trail is divided into 13 stages; twelve Heath Loops complement it, ranging from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometers in length. This offers a choice between a long-distance trail and much shorter loops as different types of hiking routes.
