Stelle brings together a variety of themes for a stay: places along the Elbe, Geest landscapes, woodland, archaeological traces and leisure activities. One helpful distinction when planning your trip is that the riverbank, Geest and woodland represent different landscape settings, while local history and leisure opportunities each offer their own focus.

Landscapes along the Elbe, on the Geest and in the woodland

Wuhlenburg, Rosenweide and Fliegenberg lie directly on the southern bank of the Elbe. The southern part of Stelle, as well as Ashausen and Büllhorn, lies on the Geest at the northern edge of a glacial terminal moraine landscape. The landscape themes therefore range from riverside places to the Geest and its glacial terrain.

Buchwedel lies south of Stelle and is a mixed beech forest with opportunities for walks and relaxation. In contrast to the riverside and Geest settings, woodland is the focus here. If you are choosing between a woodland walk and a route with a specified distance, the different options may help: Buchwedel offers opportunities for walks and relaxation, while the footpath around Junkernfeld is about six kilometres long.

Local history and archaeological traces

The St. Michael’s Church, dating from 1868, is a prominent historic landmark in the centre of Stelle. Early Bronze Age burial mounds to the west of the town attest to prehistoric settlement. The burial mound at Stelle is also west of the town and is approximately 4,000 years old.

Hof Behr houses a private museum about the history of the municipality of Stelle. You may need to contact the museum in advance to visit, so check the access arrangements beforehand. The church, burial mound and museum offer different ways to explore the town’s history across time.

Leisure and exercise in Stelle

The outdoor fitness area in Stelle combines street workout and calisthenics equipment. In summer 2024, it was expanded to include an obstacle wall, a double ladder, a three-part balance beam, and a leg raise and pull-up station. The different features offer everything from balance exercises to stations for leg raises and pull-ups.

Steller outdoor swimming pool also attracts visitors and operates seasonally. Check its current opening status before setting out.

Natural areas and routes nearby

The nearby Lower Seeve Lowlands Nature Reserve covers around 500 hectares and lies next to Maschen marshalling yard. A roughly six-kilometre footpath runs around Junkernfeld in the Lower Seeve Lowlands. As well as woodland walks in Buchwedel, the surrounding area therefore offers a route of approximately specified length.

Harburg as the wider regional setting

Harburg district encompasses a variety of landscapes, including the Elbe Marshes, the Harburg Hills, the North Heath and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. The district also has an extensive network of cycle routes, with 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycling routes. These regional themes provide a broader context alongside Stelle’s landscapes and local history.
