Lehre: Village Museum, Geopark and Local History
Accommodation in Lehre
Lehre offers several different points of interest for a trip focused on cultural history: the village museum in the historic town centre, the Geopark’s geological features and other historical sites in the municipality. If you’re looking for hotels in Lehre, these themes can help you choose what to see based on your interests. They offer a perspective that ranges from rural life at the museum to the wider regional context.
Village history in a half-timbered house
The Lehre Village Museum is housed in an old half-timbered house in the historic town centre. It opened in May 1995 and is dedicated to rural life and work. The exhibition connects living spaces with written and visual records: the living room, bedroom and kitchen are presented alongside certificates, documents and photographs. Through these materials, the museum brings more than 1,000 years of local village history to life. The three rooms illustrate domestic spaces, while the written and photographic materials extend the story beyond the individual rooms to the history of the village. The exhibition is therefore of interest both to travellers interested in rural life and work and to those who want to explore local history through documents and images. Opening hours and guided tours are available by prior arrangement. Please arrange your visit before you arrive.
The Geopark and geological features
Lehre is located within the Harz. Brunswick Land. Eastphalia Geopark and between the Jurassic basins of Hondelage and Schandelah. The Geopark stele stands in a prominent location on Marktstraße and is easily visible to tourists. An information display in Lehre helps visitors find their way with a town map showing historic buildings, a brief overview of the town’s development and a QR code linking to further information online. Nearby Schandelah is home to an exceptional fossil site of international importance, which visitors can explore.
Historic sites in the municipality of Lehre
The municipality of Lehre has other historic attractions as well. Cyclists can stop at the historic windmill in Wendhausen. Wendhausen Castle is a Baroque palace that was built in 1688 from the ruins of a medieval moated castle. The windmill and palace offer different perspectives: the windmill makes a good stop for cyclists, while the palace’s history reaches back to the medieval moated castle. The Kulturverein Lehre (Lehre Cultural Association) is also part of the local cultural scene.
Culture in the wider Helmstedt destination
The wider Helmstedt destination offers further cultural and historical attractions. In Königslutter, the Imperial Cathedral is one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in Lower Saxony. Together with the cloister and the Imperial Lothar Lime Tree in the former monastery grounds, it is a popular attraction. In Helmstedt, the Juleum Novum is the assembly hall of the former university. It was built between 1592 and 1597 as a palace-like Renaissance building. In Schöningen, you can see the Schöningen spears at the research museum, close to where they were found. They were left there around 300,000 years ago and discovered in 1994; excavations are still taking place there today. Schöningen also has a 2.5-kilometre experience trail running from the Burgplatz to the research museum, with eight stations featuring large information boards.
