Discover Marienhagen: Hiking Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Marienhagen
Marienhagen combines hiking trails with a local history that spans everything from the lime works to the church and water pumps. It also offers the natural surroundings of the disused limestone quarries, as well as facilities such as the family swimming pool and courses at the art school.
Hiking Trails and Destinations Around Marienhagen
The Ith-Hils Trail is also well signposted in Marienhagen. As local trail markings may change, check them before your hike. The Pottlandweg 1 panoramic trail runs right through Marienhagen and offers views of the Külftal valley. Pottlandweg 3, the Quarry Trail, leads to the geological nature trail at the Weenzer Bruch and to Marienhagen’s disused quarries.
Another destination is the shelter on the Hans-Froböse-Weg. The trail has led there since 2014; from the shelter, you have a good view of the Külftal valley and the Külf ridge. The Steinburchweg (DU3) circular hiking trail is 14.4 kilometres long and runs from Duingen via Weenzen, then back over Duinger Berg. Between Marienhagen and Duingen, this circular route joins the Ith-Hils hiking trail. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.
Limestone Quarries and Nature
The disused limestone quarries are a notable focus for both nature and history. Their calcareous soil is home to up to seven different protected orchid species. A range of wildlife and plants, including several lizard species, has also developed there. Ecological conditions can vary depending on the season; lizards cannot be reliably observed.
The History of the Lime Works and Architectural Heritage
The history of the town can be traced through several specific places. A monument to Friedrich Rogge, founder of the lime works, stands in the cemetery. One of the two surviving water pumps is located between the house at HauptstraĂźe 84 and the road. Before the public water supply was connected, it provided residents with drinking water; it is no longer in operation today. The local history room opened in 2002. A dedicated room gives visitors a vivid account of the history of the local lime works.
The historic Paderborner Heerstraße is also part of the town’s history: near Marienhagen, it followed the route of today’s Bundesstraße 240. The church in Marienhagen is a rectangular rubble-stone building with ashlar quoins, constructed between 1796 and 1798. Marienkirche also houses an organ built by Philipp Furtwängler & Sohn in 1857 as opus 42. It has a total of 496 pipes. The original mechanical slider chest for the manual and pedal, two wedge bellows, the treadle mechanism and Furtwängler’s iron action have been preserved. The organ is listed as a historic monument and was named “Organ of the Month” after its restoration.
Religious tradition includes an image of Mary in the Marienkapelle, which was said to have miraculous powers. It helped make Dorhagen a pilgrimage site.
Family Swimming Pool and Art School
Marienhagen’s family swimming pool has a swimming pool with a 32-metre water slide, a children’s pool with a sunshade and a kiosk. The Marienhagen art school offers various courses at its premises on Hauptstraße, where children and young people are taught arts and crafts.
