Bredenbock combines local history with nature activities in its surroundings and in the Göhrde destination. In the village itself, the half-timbered chapel is the main focus of its historical features; trails and woodland experiences complement the cultural theme with a variety of formats and time estimates. This makes it possible to plan a stay around two interests: architectural heritage and time outdoors.

Bredenbock and its Rundling history

Bredenbock is listed as a historic Rundling in category 4. However, it is no longer recognisable as a Rundling. The historical classification should therefore not be equated with a Rundling layout that is still clearly visible today: Bredenbock has a Rundling history, although its village form is no longer recognisable as a Rundling.

The half-timbered chapel of Bredenbock

The Protestant chapel in Göhrde-Bredenbock is first mentioned in the Lüneburg register of benefices in 1534. Bredenbock’s historic half-timbered chapel was rebuilt on the same site in 1732. It is a simple, towerless half-timbered building with brick infill. Towerless means that the building has no tower; brick infill refers to the brick panels between the timber framing.

The chapel includes historic votive panels, some dating from 1732, as well as a freestanding wooden bell frame. There is also a small organ with three stops in the chapel. The dates refer to different milestones: 1534 is the year the chapel was first mentioned, 1732 the year it was rebuilt and the date of origin of some of the votive panels.

The half-timbered chapel in Bredenbock is also a stop on a tour through the Göhrde. Check the route details before setting out, as they may change.

Circular trail in the surrounding area

The Naturum nature trail runs through the area around Bredenbock as a circular route of about 5 km. It starts and ends at the forest museum in Göhrde and takes around two hours on foot. Along the way, it passes natural and historical points of interest, various protected areas and notable individual biotopes. The distance and walking time provide an indication of how much time to allow; the circular trail combines nature and history.

The Naturum Göhrde also offers bookable woodland tours, ranging from fairy-tale themes to natural history, through the large, old mixed deciduous forest. Prior arrangements may be necessary. Check the booking details in advance, as they may change.

More nature activities in the Göhrde destination

The forest maze starts in the meadow directly opposite Naturum Göhrde. This family-friendly question-and-answer trail leads through the Göhrde and takes about an hour. At the same time, the route is challenging and unsuitable for people with mobility impairments or pushchairs.

Alternatively, the 1.2 km treetop giants trail has limited accessibility and can also be used with a pushchair. The Göhrde treasure trail takes about two hours: at special spots in the forest, you search for hidden QR codes. You need a smartphone and an internet connection for this. In terms of time, the maze is the shorter of the two activities with stated durations; the Göhrde treasure trail takes about as long as the nature trail around Bredenbock, but offers a different format.
