Neu Garge is part of the municipality of Sumte and lies directly on the Elbe Cycle Route. A dike path runs through Neu Garge and Viehle and loops around the Garger Elbe meadows. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between the two routes: the Elbe Cycle Route places Neu Garge on the cycling route; the dike path describes the route through Neu Garge and Viehle and around the Garger Elbe meadows. Check local path conditions before setting out.

Elbe landscape and seasonal observations

The municipality of Sumte, which includes Neu Garge, is characterized by a wide river landscape along the Elbe. Storks can be observed in this landscape in summer and wild geese in autumn. The seasons therefore offer different possible wildlife observations; sightings are not guaranteed.

In the wider destination of Amt Neuhaus: architectural heritage and border history

In the wider destination of Amt Neuhaus, Konau and neighboring Popelau form a protected historic marsh-row village. The ensemble includes Lower Saxon two-post hall houses, stables, barns and coach houses. It is considered the only fully preserved village of its kind in the world and lies directly on the dike in the Lower Saxon Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve.

In Amt Neuhaus, an exhibition coach house in the Elbe village of Konau and the border-history circular trail “Border Walks – Life on the Elbe in Konau, Popelau and Darchau,” marked with information panels, tell the story of the people who lived in the former restricted zone. The coach house uses photographs, exhibits, information panels and interviews with contemporary witnesses to share this history. The exhibition “Forced Resettlements on the Inner German Border” in Popelau documents the effects of forced resettlements on people in the district and offers interviews with contemporary witnesses at listening stations, recounting the fates of affected families. The exhibition “Border Walks – Life in the Restricted Zone” is part of a border-history circular trail about 6 km long.
