Wendisch Evern brings together memories of the end of the war in Europe and a nature reserve that extends across the village and neighboring municipalities.

Timeloberg and May 4, 1945

On May 4, 1945, a Wehrmacht delegation signed the unconditional surrender of German troops in Holland, northwestern Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, and Denmark at Timeloberg near Wendisch Evern. This surrender ushered in the end of the Second World War in Europe and liberation from Nazi rule. The hill was chosen as the signing site because it was the highest point in the area around Lüneburg. Montgomery called Timeloberg “Victory Hill.”

A memorial stone was erected at the foot of Timeloberg in 1995. It adds a visible commemorative element to the historical significance of the site. The Timeloberg memorial site is accessible via the K37 between Lüneburg and Deutsch Evern.

Plan your visit and overnight stay

The summit of Timeloberg remains part of a military training area. Check access restrictions before visiting. You should also check road and parking conditions before setting out. This will help you distinguish getting to the memorial site from whether a visit to the summit is possible.

Lüneburg’s city center is about a 15-minute bike ride from Wendisch Evern. If you are considering Wendisch Evern as a place to stay overnight, there are several accommodation options in the village. Availability may change, so check for your travel dates.

Memorial run and nature reserve

The ZeitlosLauf at Timeloberg was initiated by residents of Wendisch Evern and has been held annually since 2006. It commemorates the surrender and aims to promote international understanding. As well as historical remembrance, a recurring event is therefore part of the village’s profile. If you would like to combine your stay with the run, check the dates for the relevant year.

The Lüneburger Ilmenauniederung with Tiergarten nature reserve extends across Wendisch Evern, Deutsch Evern, and Melbeck. Its conservation objectives include preserving the largely natural course of the Ilmenau and its tributaries. Anyone interested in nature can consider these conservation aims alongside the history of Timeloberg.

For a comparison of route lengths, consider two circular routes in Amelinghausen: the route around Lopausee Lake and through Lopaupark is 2.2 kilometers long and intended for jogging, walking, and Nordic walking. The Königinnen-Weg is an 11-kilometer circular hiking trail around the heathland village of Amelinghausen. This makes it possible to compare a shorter circular route with explicitly stated uses and a longer hiking route.

The Heideblütenfest is held annually in August in the Amelinghausen collective municipality. The festival includes the crowning of the Heath Queen and a large parade. Dates and program vary; check the specific details if you would like to plan your trip around the event.
