In the wider Nienburg destination

The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a 16th-century manor house. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers further insights into the 19th century. The different sites explore a range of topics, from regional history to individual historical collections.

Other historic sites in the wider Nienburg destination offer their own points of interest. Schinna Monastery is in the Schinna district of the municipality of Stolzenau and is a heritage building of regional importance. Loccum Abbey is a monastic house built in 1163. In Bücken, St. Maternian and St. Nicholas Collegiate Church houses significant artistic treasures, including a rood cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. The Hochzeitsmühle Landesbergen, built in 1872, houses a small exhibition on local history. Nienburg’s old town also has its own distinctive character: half-timbered facades, Weser Renaissance facades and brickwork are part of a historic town with a 1,000-year history.

In Estorf, the historic Im Schünebusch barn quarter preserves nine traditional barns. A local history museum there offers insights into farming equipment, rural domestic culture, a bakehouse and village history. For activities on the water, Flotte Mittelweser offers sightseeing, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller, with departures from Nienburg or Verden. Check the operator’s timetable for a specific trip.

Cycling and day-trip destinations also add to the options in the wider Nienburg destination. A 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Path runs between Landesbergen and Stolzenau; check trail conditions before setting off. At Dinosaurier-Park Münchehagen, you can see more than 300 dinosaur footprints dating back around 140 million years. The park offers hands-on activities for young children, including excavating a 25-metre-long skeleton.
