Nienburg (Weser): Old Town, Museums and Wesavi
Accommodation in Nienburg
Nienburg (Weser) offers a range of options for your stay: a marked walking tour through the Old Town, museums on the history of the town and the police, a weekly market, and sauna and swimming facilities. The Climate Tour also offers its own thematic focus. The following destinations show you how you can spend your time in the town.
Old Town and sights along the Bear Trail
The Nienburg Bear Trail is a 3.3-kilometre walking tour through the Old Town. Five hundred large white bear paw prints set into the pavement mark the route. It passes 32 sights, including the town hall, St. Martin’s Parish Church, the Fresenhof and Posthof, as well as the Quaet-Faslem House with its Asparagus Museum. The Police Museum and several monuments are also along the trail.
Information boards along the walking tour provide more details about the sights. Both the markings and the explanations help you find your way: the paw prints mark the route, while the boards provide additional information about the stops. The Bear Trail thus showcases not just individual buildings, but a series of Old Town sights.
Two museums, different focuses
The Nienburg Museum presents regional history in Nienburg’s oldest half-timbered building. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the town and the district of Nienburg/Weser. Archaeology is a major focus, with topics including the Nienburg culture and finds from the early medieval burial ground at Liebenau. The exhibition thus brings together a broad regional perspective and specific archaeological examples.
The Lower Saxony Police Museum is permanently located at Lange Straße 20–22 in Nienburg. It presents knowledge and facts in an engaging way on forensic processing, police photography and the work of the criminal police. The museum also offers insights into the various means of transport used by the Lower Saxony police since the Second World War. Unlike the Nienburg Museum, its focus is on police work and its development; the two museums therefore cover different subject areas.
Weekly market, Wesavi and the Climate Tour
The weekly market, “Europe’s most beautiful weekly market,” takes place in Nienburg’s town centre on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. If you want to plan a visit to the market, you can schedule your stay for one of these mornings.
Wesavi is a sauna and swimming complex in the heart of Nienburg. Its outdoor area includes a garden sauna at 70°C and a Weser sauna at 90°C. The Weser sauna is also described as offering panoramic views of the Weser marshes. The two saunas therefore differ both in temperature and in the view on offer.
The Nienburg Climate Tour offers another way to explore the town. It links nature conservation areas, a wind turbine, a nature-oriented show and educational garden, and a farm shop. While the Bear Trail focuses on its marked 3.3-kilometre route through the Old Town and its sights, the Climate Tour brings together themes related to nature, energy, gardens and the farm shop.
