Warpe combines historic mills with a signposted sculpture trail. The mills represent different histories of architecture and technology, while the circular trail brings artworks into the municipality’s landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose a focus on the mills or a longer route featuring art in the landscape.

Mills: architecture and technology

Busch’ens Mill in Nordholz is a grain mill dating from 1910 and was renovated in 2001. Its operation is distinctive: the grinding mechanism works without water and is powered by an electric motor. The construction date, later renovation and drive technology are different aspects of the mill’s history. This example makes it possible to distinguish its function as a grain mill from the technology of its grinding mechanism.

The single-storey Hohnhorst Watermill, dating from 1780, is located in Hohnhorst. It is part of a large farm; a grain-grinding mechanism has been preserved in the half-timbered building. Undershot means that the water acts on the lower part of the mill wheel.

Heuermann Watermill in Helzendorf is considered the site of Lower Saxony’s oldest watermill (860). The year refers to this historical classification of the site, not to the age of the present-day building.

Sculpture trail: art across nearly 16 kilometres

The signposted Warpe Sculpture Trail is a nearly 16-kilometre circular route through the municipality of Warpe. Eight different sculptures line the route, bringing art into the landscape. The works include pieces made of granite and steel, colourful designs and a three-tonne colossus. Their materials, colours and sizes create different accents along the route.

You can explore the sculpture trail on foot or by bicycle. Both options follow the same signposted loop; the distance of nearly 16 kilometres provides a specific figure to help with planning. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The mills and sculpture trail offer different ways to experience Warpe: the mills focus on architecture, grinding mechanisms and historical context, while the route brings together eight artworks along a defined circular trail. You can choose your focus depending on whether you are more interested in mill technology and architectural history or in art in the landscape.
