Discover Eggermühlen
Accommodation in Eggermühlen
Discover Eggermühlen along trails that highlight a variety of themes. The Eggertaler Explorer Trail is a circular route through the historic farming communities of Besten, Basum-Sussum, Döthen and Bockraden in the municipality of Eggermühlen. It is intended for cyclists and hikers and offers impressions of culture and nature. The trail also provides insights into the symbolism of modern architecture. So, along with spending time outdoors, you can explore architecture.
There are nine covered shelters along the trail where you can take a break. When planning your trip, you can factor them in alongside the circular route’s cultural and natural attractions. The Eggertaler Explorer Trail is therefore about both the route itself and the themes you encounter along the way.
Trails linking architecture, literature and nature
The Eggertaler Poets’ Trail offers a different cultural perspective. Ten information boards display poems by German poets and thinkers. Literature takes centre stage here, in contrast to the insights into the symbolism of modern architecture offered by the Explorer Trail. When choosing between the two trails, consider whether you would prefer the cultural and natural impressions of a circular route or the literary displays along the way.
Near Sussum, an exposed 25-tonne granite boulder adds another feature to the Poets’ Trail. It stands in a wooded area, with Goethe’s “The Erl-King” presented nearby. The boulder and the poem offer different points of reference: a large natural rock sits alongside a literary work. Together, they give the Poets’ Trail a tangible feature beyond its information boards.
The Maiburg nature reserve also offers its own choice of walks. These include marked hiking trails and the signposted “Vosspädken” forest trail. Alongside the Eggertaler themed trails, you can therefore choose routes within a nature reserve. These differences can help you plan your hotel search: would you like to combine cycling and culture, explore poetry, or choose marked trails in Maiburg?
More destinations in the wider Osnabrück destination
The wider Osnabrück destination offers additional themes to explore. At the Bad Essen-Barkhausen dinosaur tracks, the visitor area includes two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular trail. Fossilised dinosaur tracks can be seen on a steep rock face. The marked dinosaur trail at the site is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route. The visitor area and the hiking route therefore offer different ways to explore the subject of dinosaurs.
For cultural history, there are other distinct destinations to visit. At the Bramsche Textile Museum, fluffy woollen blankets are made on working machines that are over 100 years old. At the Kalkriese Museum and Park, exhibits about the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest are presented using multimedia and are open to visitors. These places are part of the wider Osnabrück destination; they are not trails in Eggermühlen. This makes it possible to distinguish Eggermühlen’s local highlights—the circular route, Poets’ Trail and Maiburg—from other cultural and nature themes in the destination.
