Bad Grund (Harz) lies in the western Harz, in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony. The town’s more recent history is closely connected with silver and lead mining. At the same time, forest trails, geological features and a health-focused offering provide different reasons to visit. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you want to focus more on the landscape, mining history or outdoor activities.

Forest, Rocks and Views

The WeltWald Harz covers 65 hectares and is home to more than 600 species of trees and shrubs. Information boards explain the species, their origins and related topics. The trail network includes around twelve kilometres of paths, four themed trails and viewpoints. The Indianer-Erlebnispfad (Indian Adventure Trail) runs for 1.7 kilometres through North American forest landscapes, with suspension bridges along the way. The focus is thus on both the diversity of the trees and a dedicated themed trail.

A prominent geological landmark is the HĂĽbichenstein, north of Bad Grund. This limestone crag, more than 40 metres high, is a remnant of a Devonian coral reef. The Iberger Albertturm offers a different perspective: the approximately 33-metre-high observation tower stands on the Iberg and affords views over the western Harz and the western Harz foreland. The HĂĽbichenstein is about the formation of the rock, while the tower is about views across the landscape.

Trails and Different Route Formats

The König-Hübich-Route runs around Bad Grund, is 11.6 kilometres long and has seven access points. It can be used for hiking, walking individual sections or jogging. In terms of length, it is close to the approximately twelve kilometres of trails in the WeltWald Harz. However, the two figures describe different formats: one is a route around Bad Grund, while the other is a network with four themed trails and viewpoints.

Forestry work can temporarily restrict the König-Hübich-Route and affect trails in the WeltWald Harz. Before setting off, check current trail conditions if a particular route is important to your plans. The lengths are also useful for comparison: the König-Hübich-Route is given as a single route, whereas the figure for the WeltWald covers its trail network.

Mining History and Visiting Conditions

The Knesebeck shaft is the visitor-accessible section of the former Grund ore mine and is operated as a show mine. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Plan your visit to the shaft accordingly and check the current visiting conditions before your trip.

The Märchental Bad Grund (Fairy Tale Valley) also draws on the mining history: its exhibition is based on the Iberg and the town’s traditional mining history. The exhibition concept may change. Before visiting, check its current focus if the exhibition is an important part of your plans.

Health Offerings and Getting There

Bad Grund is a climatic health resort with a therapeutic mine. Speleotherapy is offered in the Eisensteinstollen on the Iberg as part of Bad Grund’s health-focused offering. Before travelling, check whether the therapy is available and whether it is suitable given your medical situation. This allows you to consider health offerings separately from opportunities for hiking, enjoying the views and exploring mining history.

Rail travellers can use Gittelde-Bad Grund station, which has a direct connection to the regional bus. Check the timetable before travelling, as transport connections and times may change. It is also helpful to consider the different visiting conditions when choosing your activities: forestry work may restrict the König-Hübich-Route, the Knesebeck shaft is accessible only as part of a guided tour, and the Märchental exhibition concept may evolve.
