Funnix: Brick Church, Sculpture Garden and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Funnix
Funnix offers three different points of interest for a stay: St. Florian Brick Church, the sculpture garden and the Jan-Schüpp cycle path. The church and garden offer cultural and contemporary highlights; the cycle path provides a direct connection to cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Funnix, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your interests. The key question is which aspect appeals to you: architectural and organ history, art in the garden or the town’s connection to a cycling route.
St. Florian Brick Church
St. Florian Brick Church was built in the 14th century on a high dwelling mound. Its construction, date and elevated location give the church a distinct historical character. The organ adds a special chapter to this story: it is the last organ by East Frisian organ builder Johann Friedrich Constabel. St. Florian thus brings together a medieval church building and a work from the region’s organ-building tradition. Culturally minded travellers will find two specific points of interest: the building’s period and the history of a named organ builder.
Sculpture Garden: Steel Sculptures and Exhibitions
The Funnix Sculpture Garden is directly opposite the brick church. It combines landscaped grounds with contemporary steel sculptures; most of the collection consists of works by local steel sculptor Leonard Wübbena. Since 2007, the garden has also presented works by national and international artists in exhibitions that change annually. One particularly striking work is the walk-in Corten steel sculpture “Marschblick”. Its stair-like form offers a view of the flat East Frisian landscape and wide sky through an open window frame. Here, movement and looking through the frame go hand in hand: you can enter the sculpture and take in the landscape through its frame.
The garden offers different ways to engage with art: “Marschblick” combines a single walk-in work with a view of the landscape, while the annual changing exhibitions showcase works by national and international artists. This lets you choose between focusing on a specific sculpture and exploring the changing exhibition programme.
Funnix by Bike
The Jan-Schüpp cycle path continues from Altfunnixsiel to Funnix and runs alongside the Harle for some sections. Near Funnix, you can take a detour from the cycle path to the sculpture garden; the round trip is about 2.8 kilometres. This makes the garden an easy destination to include in your cycling plans. If you plan to take the detour, check the signs and route conditions before setting off, as they may change.
The town’s attractions offer different options for planning your stay: St. Florian is known for its architectural and organ history, the garden opposite for steel sculptures and changing exhibitions, and the cycle path for its connection to the route. If local culture is your main interest, you can explore the church and garden together; on a cycling trip, you can include the garden as a detour.
