Dornumergrode: Terps, Gulf House and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Dornumergrode
Dornumergrode combines a settlement history shaped by terps with East Frisian architectural heritage and a cycling route that starts and ends here. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: the settlement’s origins in the marshes, two distinctive buildings, a longer cycling route, and a shorter Boßeln route. Depending on your interests in the landscape, architecture, or outdoor activities, you can explore the area in different ways.
Langwarf, Marshland, and Sluice Structure
Dornumergrode was founded on a long terp and is surrounded by calcareous marshland. The raised settlement and the marsh landscape form the historic setting for the village. In the early 17th century, the entire foreland ready for diking, from Dornumergrode to Middelsbur, was enclosed by a dike; at the same time, a sluice structure secured the Accumer Ee. Both the terp as a form of settlement and the diking and safeguarding of the Accumer Ee are important aspects of the development of the coastal landscape. They illustrate different facets of the village’s history, which extends beyond its present-day appearance alone.
Gulf House and Villa Dühringshof
Dornumergrode’s architectural heritage includes the very large Dornumergroder Vorwerk, a Gulf house of the East Frisian type. Villa Dühringshof offers a different architectural accent: it is a striking, detached, two-storey plastered building. Comparing the two buildings reveals different forms: on the one hand, the large Gulf house; on the other, the detached, two-storey building. These distinct features offer concrete points of interest if you are interested in the village’s architectural heritage.
Cycling Route and Boßeln Route
The “Der Älteste” circular cycling route starts and ends in Dornumergrode at node 18 and is approximately 25 kilometres long. In places, it follows the Dornum node network route. About 350 metres after the start, an old terp with two houses can be seen beside the route. This means the route combines a longer bike ride with an early view of a specific feature of the terp landscape. As route conditions can vary, it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
Boßeln on Störtebekerstraße offers a different kind of route: the out-and-back distance is approximately four kilometres. The two activities therefore differ both in the type of outing and in the stated distance. The cycling route is described as a loop starting and finishing at node 18; the Boßeln route is described as an out-and-back journey. Both distances are approximate and serve as a guide for planning.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Dornum
If you would like to broaden your focus to the wider destination of Dornum, you will find other distinct cultural attractions there. Dornum Synagogue has been a memorial site since 1992. The building that survives today was erected in 1841 and is the only surviving synagogue in East Frisia. The permanent exhibition explores Jewish life; the “Synagoge Dornum” association operates the memorial site and is responsible for the exhibitions.
Other historic landmarks in Dornum include the post mill. It is the last post mill in East Frisia and has been a landmark of the village since 1626. The Baroque moated castle developed from the Norderburg of chieftain Hicko Kankena, which stood there in the 14th century. A gallery runs around the restored Knights’ Hall in the moated castle. The ceiling is decorated with figurative and ornamental paintings; historic oil paintings on the walls tell the story of the von Closter family and their relatives.
