Discover Peine: Churches, museums and trails
Accommodation in Peine
When looking for a hotel in Peine, it is worth considering the topics that interest you: the featured destinations range from Peine’s architectural and everyday history to parks, pilgrimage routes and forest activity trails in other places.
Churches and architectural history
Two churches in Peine represent different chapters in architectural history. The Protestant Church of St. Jakobi was built in 1899 in the neo-Gothic style. Its original colorful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of Zu den Heiligen Engeln was also built in the neo-Gothic style, from 1866 to 1869, based on plans by Hanoverian building officer Haase. One of its distinctive furnishings is a triumphal cross dating from the 13th century.
Another architectural highlight is the Kleine Petersdom, also known as Markuskirche, in Hohenhameln-Equord. This smaller, true-to-scale replica of St. Peter’s Basilica was built at the Equord estate starting in 1697. Visits must be arranged in advance by telephone. Bear this requirement in mind when planning a visit.
Museums: everyday life, local history and remembrance
The Peine District Museum tells the history and stories of the town and region. Its 1,000 m² of exhibition space focuses on everyday life in different eras and on the lives and work of craftspeople, industrial workers, citizens and farmers. It also covers local features of the Peine region. In this way, the museum offers different perspectives on everyday life rather than limiting the town’s history to a single topic.
ZeitRäume Bodenstedt displays preserved original furnishings from various stylistic periods in the main house of a three-sided farmstead, built in 1878. Audio presentations and film projections bring developments from the imperial era through the 1960s to life. The historic rooms and broad time span give a visit a different focus from the town and everyday history presented at the district museum.
In Peine, the Burgpark also offers an introduction to local history: visitors can get an overview of the excavations and Peine’s old town. Information boards explain the excavation finds and the history of Peine Castle. For a different perspective on the history of Lengede, a pre-booked tour of the “Wunder von Lengede” Museum begins with an account of everyday life in the mining community and documentation of the “Miracle of Lengede.” The visit then continues to the memorial to the mining disaster.
Parks and outdoor experiences
The former palace park has been preserved in Vechelde. Visitors can stroll past Baroque sculptures and rose beds. The park at Rittergut Alvesse in Vechelde-Alvesse covers around 3.2 hectares and is laid out in the landscape style. Its design is defined by wide lawns, trees and shrubs along the edges, and an interesting collection of trees. The two park descriptions emphasize different features: Baroque sculptures and rose beds in one, an informal landscape garden with open lawns and wooded borders in the other.
The forest discovery trail in Zweidorfer Holz offers a family-friendly outing with several activity stations. These include activities involving forest sounds and stacking wood, a barefoot sensory path and a forest bed, as well as animal long jump, tree history and a tree telephone. The stations combine nature-related topics with a variety of sensory and hands-on activities.
Pilgrimage routes and regional highlights
The Via Romea, also known as the Romweg, passes through Rietze, a village in the municipality of Edemissen in the district of Peine. Rietze is therefore part of the pilgrimage route of Abbot Albert of Stade. The Braunschweig Way of St. James has a different focus: it passes through the mining park, by ponds and open-cast mines, into the old village of Lengede and onward to Woltwiesche. These landmarks help visitors follow the route, while the Via Romea is described here in relation to Rietze and the pilgrimage route.
A detour for chocolate lovers
The Rausch Schokoladenhaus in Peine sells high-quality chocolate at its factory outlet. If you plan a visit, check the current opening hours and visitor requirements before setting out. This lets you include this specific stop in your plans without treating it as the same kind of destination as the churches, museums or natural attractions.
