Evensen offers several different reasons to visit: the adjacent Evenser Moor, a cycling route through the village, the manor estate with organic farming, and a connection to cultural history. The following topics will help you put nature, cycling and local history into context for your stay.

Evenser Moor: Landscape and Consideration

The Evenser Moor nature reserve directly borders the southeastern edge of Evensen. It covers approximately 47 hectares and is an old, shallow, moss-covered loop of the Leine River. This description links the river to the moor’s distinctive landscape. Visitors should stay on the paths in the nature reserve, and dogs must be kept on a leash. Please bear these rules in mind when exploring the moor.

Cycling through Evensen

An approximately 35-kilometre cycling route passes through Evensen and other villages in the northern part of Neustadt am RĂĽbenberge. It offers a different perspective from the moor itself: the focus is on a route through several villages rather than a single landscape area. The approximate distance is a useful guide when planning your own ride. Check the route before setting off so you can take the current route into account.

The village of Mandelsloh and Evensen Manor

Evensen belongs to the village of Mandelsloh. St. Osdag’s Basilica and landscapes along the Leine are located within the village, while the Franzee natural swimming lake is in Amedorf. These locations are distinct: Evensen belongs to Mandelsloh, whereas the swimming lake is in Amedorf. These names help distinguish the different places to visit in the surrounding area.

Evensen Manor is a historic estate with active organic farming. The café sells venison, oils made from gold-of-pleasure, flax and hemp, seeds, and wild herbs directly from the farm. Those particularly interested in agricultural products will find a direct connection to farm-gate sales here. Check before you travel whether sales are still available.

A connection to cultural history

The disc cross stone may be Evensen’s oldest monument. According to local tradition, it commemorates the fatal outcome of a quarrel between brothers in the 17th or 18th century. Both the suggested age and the story are presented with appropriate qualifications: the former is possible, while the latter is part of local tradition. For those interested in local history, the stone thus combines a cautious historical assessment with a local legend.

Culture in the wider destination of Neustadt am RĂĽbenberge

The wider destination of Neustadt am Rübenberge also offers cultural attractions in their own right. Schloss Landestrost was built between 1573 and 1584 as a grand Renaissance building. Its rooms regularly host exhibitions and events such as theatre performances, concerts and readings. The Church of Our Lady in Neustadt am Rübenberge was first mentioned in a document in 1247, initially built as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica, and remodelled in the Gothic style in 1502. It lies on a branch of the Loccum–Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route. The church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 April to 31 October; check the details before your visit.

Another option in the wider destination is the Helstorf Blacksmith Museum. On the third Sunday of each month from April to October, blacksmiths demonstrate their craft there; visitors can also try it themselves. Visits can also be arranged by appointment. Please arrange the date and details in advance. This makes it easy to distinguish the seasonal demonstrations from visits by appointment when planning your trip.
