Discover Garbsen: Local History Museum, Cycling Ring and Blue Lake
Accommodation in Garbsen
Garbsen combines city history with a signposted cycling ring and a range of leisure attractions at the Blue Lake. If you’re looking for a hotel in Garbsen, these themes can help you choose your destination: are you mainly interested in local history, a bike ride or leisure activities by the water?
City history at the museum and historic buildings
The Garbsen Local History Museum is housed in the workers’ kitchen of a former brickworks. It presents the development of the ten formerly rural communities that make up the present-day city. Another focus of the museum is the brickworks and dimension stone industries, which played a central role in Garbsen from 1875 to 1980. This places municipal development and industrial history side by side as two distinct topics.
Schloß Ricklingen is home to a magnificent Baroque church that is considered unique in northern Germany in certain respects. The Leine Bridge, built in 1895, is also located there. It has been restored and is now considered an industrial monument. The church and bridge offer different historical perspectives: sacred Baroque architecture on the one hand, and a restored structure with industrial monument status on the other.
Cycling ring, canal and leisure activities at the Blue Lake
The Garbsen Cycling Ring is signposted as the city’s official cycling route. It invites you to discover Garbsen’s urban and rural scenery and stop at points of interest along the way. Check the signs on site before setting off. The Mittelland Canal also runs through the Garbsen municipal area, for around 1.6 kilometres.
At the Blue Lake recreation area in Garbsen, the adventure mini-golf course has 14 holes spread across the gently sloping terrain along the lakeshore. The Blue Lake near Garbsen also has a 600-metre-long sandy beach, water ski lifts and a 65-metre-long water slide. This means there are several specific leisure attractions here: the mini-golf course, the beach, and the water-skiing and waterslide facilities.
A traditional festival in June

The wider Hannover Region destination also offers further landscape and cultural attractions. Lake Steinhude is the largest inland body of water in northwestern Germany and is particularly well known for its excellent water sports and holiday opportunities. In Mardorf, a state-recognised resort, a five-kilometre lakeside path invites visitors to take a stroll. The Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover consist of the Great Garden, the Berggarten, the Georgengarten and the Welfengarten. These examples showcase a range of regional interests: water sports, lakeside walks and gardens. At Herrenhausen, the Berggarten developed from a vegetable and nursery garden into a botanical garden.
