With its eight districts, Wennigsen (Deister) lies at the foot of the Deister’s northern slope. Historic watermills, a precision-engineered art installation, trails to the waterwheels and a natural swimming pool give this destination a variety of things to explore. When planning your stay, it helps to decide first whether culture, time outdoors, swimming or a particular event date is your priority.

A mill that tells the story of the town

The Wennigsen local history museum is housed in the Obere Mühle, a half-timbered building with a waterwheel. The building was constructed around 1700 as one of Wennigsen’s original seven watermills. This makes the history of the town’s mills tangible in a specific historic building. Those interested in the town’s development will find a different focus here than at the Wennigsen Time Monument: this precision-engineered art installation was created and built by master precision mechanic and amateur astronomer Erich Pollähne. The mill and the Time Monument thus represent different themes in cultural history.

Waterwheels, trails and a natural swimming pool

An interactive forest education trail leads from the Wennigsen “Waldkater” hiking car park to the waterwheels in the Deister and has eight stations. An approximately three-kilometre footpath also leads directly from the “Wennigser Waldkater” car park to the waterwheels. These two details can help you plan an outing; as trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route before setting off.

For cyclists, the base loop of the “Green Chain” is a longer circular route: it is about 30 kilometres long and passes through all eight villages of Wennigsen (Deister). By comparison, the footpath from Waldkater to the waterwheels is a much shorter option at about three kilometres. The circular route and the footpath therefore differ both in length and in format.

The Wennigsen water park offers something different. This natural swimming pool has just under 2,000 square metres of swimming area. The bathing water is naturally cleaned without chemicals, using a regeneration pond and native aquatic plants. If you are planning your trip around swimming, the size of the swimming area and the natural water-cleaning process are the defining features of this destination.

Plan your journey and event dates

S-Bahn trains between Wennigsen (Deister) and Hanover run every half hour, and the journey takes 25 minutes. Check the service frequency and journey time before you travel. Bus routes 540 and 362 run from Wennigsen (Deister) station to the “Schützenhof” stop on Bröhnweg for the water park. From there, it is about a 700-metre walk. This information helps with two different planning questions: the connection to Hanover and the bus journey followed by a walk to the water park.

If you would like to plan your visit around a festival, the Historic Freischießen is a recurring event. It is celebrated every three years and commemorates the medieval peasant and citizens’ militia. The festival includes a colourful procession with historic carriages and costumes, watched by thousands of visitors. Check the official events calendar before planning your trip around it.
