Two different interests take centre stage on a trip to Ahausen: outdoor activities starting at Ahausen Mill and Ahauser Herbst, an arts and cultural event. You can plan your trip around whether you want to spend time walking, hiking or cycling, or have a specific cultural programme in mind.

Exploring from Ahausen Mill

You can set off on walks, short hikes and cycling tours from the grounds of Ahausen Mill. On foot, options range from a stroll to a short hike; cycling tours are also possible. This means a range of activities start right at the mill.

A connecting trail also leads from Ahausen Mill to the approximately 32-kilometre NORDPFAD Wümmeniederung circular hiking trail. The distance refers to the full loop. Compared with the short hikes starting at the mill, this is a longer hiking option; check trail conditions before setting off.

Arts and culture at Ahauser Herbst

Held in autumn, Ahauser Herbst is a four-day arts and cultural event close to Ahausen Mill. The programme includes evening concerts, art exhibitions, readings and theatre performances. The Heimatverein Ahausen e.V. (Ahausen Local History Association) organises the arts and cultural festival.

For your trip planning, a visit to Ahauser Herbst differs from a trip along the circular hiking trail: the specific edition and its programme are what matter here. Individual editions and programmes vary. So check the dates and offerings for the relevant edition before your trip.

The history of Ahausen Mill

Ahausen Mill was first mentioned in 1694. The year refers to its first mention and does not necessarily indicate when the mill was built. For travellers interested in the history of the area as well as outdoor activities, it provides a specific historical point of reference.

In the wider Rotenburg destination

The wider Rotenburg destination has 24 NORDPFADE trails, all circular hiking routes between 5 and 32 kilometres long. At approximately 32 kilometres, the NORDPFAD Wümmeniederung is roughly at the upper end of this regional range. This puts the loop starting at Ahausen Mill in context with the wider variety of hiking trails in the Rotenburg destination.

The Wümme Cycle Route is also part of the wider Rotenburg destination. It is a circular route approximately 250 kilometres long that follows the River Wümme more or less. Its northern route is about 125 kilometres long, and its southern route about 135 kilometres. Connecting routes divide the trail into individual sections, which are also suitable for day trips and families.

In the wider Rotenburg destination, the NORDPFAD Ostetal passes through a natural river landscape with dense riverside forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. Together, the Tister Bauernmoor and Ekelmoor form a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex. The Burgsittensen Moor Railway travels at 6 km/h through the Tister Bauernmoor, a typical raised bog landscape with pools, grasses, heather plants and birch trees.
