Discover Bremervörde on Lake Vörder See
Accommodation in Bremervörde
In Bremervörde, nature at Lake Vörder See, local history and places to visit along the Oste are all close together. You can weigh up which focus best suits your trip by considering the places and activities available: a stay with views of the water and landscape offers a different experience from visiting historic buildings or taking a train journey.
Lake Vörder See and the port on the Oste
Bremervörde Nature and Adventure Park covers around 100 hectares, is free to enter and lies directly beside Lake Vörder See. Sailing, surfing, rowing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible on the lake. This makes the area a good choice for travellers who would like to combine their stay with water sports or a walk in the park. The activities mentioned are different from one another; which ones suit your plans depends on your own itinerary.
The port of Bremervörde also reflects the town’s connection to the water: it is the last navigable, tide-dependent port on the Oste and also the starting point of the German Ferry Route from Bremervörde to Kiel. Its dependence on the tides is as much a part of the port’s character as its role as the starting point for the route. Those interested in maritime topics will find a different way to experience the town here than at the lake.
Discover buildings and collections
The Bachmann Museum displays collections on geology and archaeology in the last surviving building of Bremervörde Castle. The former chancery and stables building is 400 years old. Among the collection’s best-known objects are a Neolithic wooden wheel from Gnarrenburg-Karlshöfen, around 4,600 years old, and two fossil whale skeletons, around 12 million years old. The museum is currently closed to visitors for extensive renovation work. The museum park remains open for a walk through Bremervörde’s history. Check the museum’s reopening status before your trip.
In Bevern, the listed Pape Brickworks offers an opportunity to see how bricks were once made, on the original site. Visitors can walk through the ring kiln, engine house, drying sheds and workers’ house; information boards explain the manufacturing process. The well-preserved brickworks is an industrial monument and a tourist attraction in the region. Together with the Bachmann Museum’s collections, it offers insights into different subjects: geology and archaeology at the museum, and work in a brickworks here.
On the shore of Lake Vörder See stands Haus am See, a Lower Saxon house with a thatched roof, rebuilt in 1986. It is the half-timbered Tietjen house, built in 1861 in Ostendorf, Farm No. 1. The coach house and barn were also rebuilt true to the originals. The building houses an excursion restaurant, a country inn, a brewery taproom and an event venue. If you plan to visit any of these, check current availability.
Another collection is located on the ground floor of the Old Town Hall in central Bremervörde. The museum there houses around 220 works by the artist Otto Tetjus Tügel, collected by Hein Meyer. If you prefer to explore the town through several locations, you can use the “Bremervörde City Discovery” guide: it shows the locations of 34 objects that have become significant to the town and its residents, and offers insights into Bremervörde’s history and distinctive features.
Excursions by train and bicycle
The historic Moorexpress runs from the end of April to the beginning of October along a route just under 99 kilometres long, with more than 20 stops. Special services also run during the winter and Christmas season. A bicycle carriage makes it possible to take your bike along, so you can combine a cycling tour with a train journey. The season may vary from one operating year to the next; check the current timetable and special-service dates before making plans.
There are also four local themed routes around Bremervörde. The 50-kilometre Ostekultur Route offers nature and cultural experiences along the Oste. Its length and mix of themes give you two concrete points to consider when planning an excursion. If you would rather choose a guided tour than put together your own selection of sights, also take the town’s different tour options into account when planning.
