Tarmstedt: Art, history and a moor trail
Accommodation in Tarmstedt
Tarmstedt combines art along the main street, historic buildings and memorial sites with a moor trail west of the village. The annual Tarmstedt Exhibition and regional guided tours also give your trip a distinctive focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Tarmstedt, you can consider whether you are mainly interested in local history, art, or the flora and fauna of the moor. These themes differ both in content and in how you can plan your visit.
Art in the village setting
The Tarmstedt Cultural Mile, organised by the Kultur-Forum SG Tarmstedt, comprises several large-scale artworks along the main street near the primary school. Locally, this stretch is known as “Unter den Linden” (“Under the Linden Trees”). The “Unter den Linden” sculpture park is also on Tarmstedt’s main street; its exhibits show something from and about the village. The two art attractions have different emphases: the Cultural Mile focuses on the large-scale works and their location, while the sculpture park focuses on the exhibits’ connection to Tarmstedt. This makes it possible to experience art in the context of the village while gaining a distinct perspective on its history.
Buildings and memorial sites
The Tarmstedt Spieker is a building dating from 1754, with a bakehouse, on Bremer Landstraße. It is privately owned by the Thölken family and served for many years as a local history museum. Its year of construction, bakehouse and former museum function give the Spieker its historical significance. St. Petri Church is a brick building dating from 1722. The two dates place the church 32 years before the Spieker.
Tarmstedt also has a memorial site dedicated to its railway history: Jan-Reiners Eck is at the corner of Bremer Landstraße and Bauernreihe and commemorates the “Jan-Reiners” narrow-gauge railway. The railway line between Bremen and Tarmstedt operated from 1900 to 1956. The site therefore links a specific street location with the history of a former railway connection and its period of operation.
The moor trail in Tarmstedt Moor
West of Tarmstedt, the moor trail leads through the flora and fauna of Tarmstedt Moor. Along the way, you can see cotton grass, purple moor grass and downy birch, learn more about the creatures native to the area, and find out about peat extraction in the past. The trail thus combines nature observation with landscape history: in addition to the plants and animals, the moor’s former use is also one of the topics covered along the way. If you want your trip planning to take account not only of the sights in the village but also of the moorland, this trail offers a distinct focus.
