Lauenau offers thematic starting points for a trip focused on architectural history, local history and cultural events. When looking for a hotel in Lauenau, you can consider whether historic buildings and museum visits or exhibitions and concert dates should be at the heart of your trip.

Architectural and Local History

Schloss Schwedesdorf was built in the Weser Renaissance style; the Meysenbug manor house in Lauenau is designed in the English Tudor style. Architecture enthusiasts can compare two distinct styles here. Malvida von Meysenbug lived at the Meysenbug manor house for a time. The Amtsschloss dates from the 16th century. St. Luke’s Church is considered a masterpiece by church architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase.

The Amt and Flecken Museum documents local history and displays many original objects relating to the post, railway and Deister mining. It thus complements the look at the buildings with three further subject areas represented in the museum by original objects. The sites and collections offer different ways to explore Lauenau’s history: through architecture, biography, and the subjects of the post, railway and mining.

Nature and Cultural Events

A Süntel beech tree around 200 years old stands in Lauenau’s Volkspark. As a natural landmark, the tree provides a different point of interest alongside the historic buildings and museum themes.

The Kesselhaus Lauenau can accommodate almost 200 visitors; nearly 25 concerts are held there each year. The Kunstetage is close to the Kesselhaus and presents changing exhibitions by various artists. Concerts and exhibitions thus offer different cultural experiences at neighbouring venues. As programmes, individual exhibitions and opening hours can change, it is worth checking the latest dates before visiting.

The sawmill has a large stage and is particularly suitable for concerts, music events and theatre performances. If you want to plan your trip around a specific event, check the current programme. The Gesindehaus serves as a starting point for guided tours of Lauenau. If you plan to join a tour, check in advance whether one is available and when it takes place.

Schaumburg as a Regional Setting

Within the wider destination of Schaumburg, the district can be reached by car, train and even by boat via the Mittelland Canal. An important east–west railway line runs through the district; stations are located in Stadthagen and Bückeburg, with smaller stops in Lindhorst and Kirchhorsten. The Weser Renaissance Route serves as a guide for art and history enthusiasts travelling through the district.

The wider landscape is also framed by Schaumburg: in the northeast, the district borders Lake Steinhude near Hagenburg, while the Weser and Weser Uplands shape the landscape in the south. Two circular trails of 1.7 km and 2.3 km run through the Liekwegen Old Quarry. Five information stations currently explain the importance of the quarry habitat and its biodiversity.
