Behringen: Heath Trails, Burial Mounds and Brunausee
Accommodation in Behringen
Behringen brings together heath trails, a burial mound site, Brunausee and a village park. These different aspects of the town may influence your plans for your stay: would you like to explore trails through the heath, stroll by the water or learn about local history? A visit to the village park and local specialities are also among the things to enjoy here.
Heath Trails and Burial Mounds
Behringer Heide begins just behind the car park on Haverbecker StraĂźe. The car park is about 500 metres from the edge of Behringen. From there, the Heideweite hiking trail leads through the heath along heathland paths, through a small patch of woodland and past a historic sheepfold to the heathland on Wulfsberg. The route described thus connects heath and woodland with a historic building along the way.
For a cycling trip, there is the Behringer Heidetour: a 21.26-kilometre circular route starting and ending in Behringen. The accessible circular trail in Behringer Hügelgräberheide is much shorter, at around 400 metres. If you plan to use these trails, check the details of each route before setting out.
The Behringen burial mound site is also located on the edge of town and contains at least 27 burial mounds of various sizes. In addition to its heath trails, the edge of town therefore offers a separate destination for anyone interested in historic traces in the landscape.
Brunausee and the Village Park
Brunausee is a 70,000-square-metre artificial lake, created in the 1980s, at the entrance to the town. It is set in idyllic, wooded surroundings and is a destination for walks and relaxation by the water. Four pedal boats can be rented at the lake through Café Seeterrasse.
Behringer Seefest takes place at Brunausee on the first weekend in August. Highlights include illuminated water displays followed by a fireworks show high in the sky. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with the festival, check the programme for the year in question.
In the heart of Behringen, the village park with its heath garden invites you to linger. It has seating, a boules court and a chessboard. The lake and village park offer different places to take a break: by the water or right in the centre of town.
History and Regional Specialities
Behringer Heide is a restored heathland area. It was once part of a military training area used by British forces. After the former area was handed over to the Verein Naturschutzpark in 1994, volunteers and the Behringen tourism association restored the heath. This history is part of the landscape, along with the trails that now run through it.
Landschlachterei Hermann Meyer invites you to try delicacies made from Heidschnucken sheep raised in the LĂĽneburg Heath Nature Reserve. The meat has been prepared there since 1928 using recipes refined over generations. If you plan to visit, check the current opening details in advance.
Getting Here with the Heide-Shuttle
From 3 July 2026, Behringen will be on the Heide-Shuttle’s Ring 2 route, which runs between Tostedt, Handeloh, Undeloh, Egestorf and Oberhaverbeck. On this route, the shuttle carries bicycles free of charge to points of interest or to the starting points of cycling and hiking tours. Check the seasonal timetable details before travelling.
