Grindau offers travelers several starting points for planning a trip: a music festival, village culture, handcrafted work from a local atelier, and cycling and hiking trails at Hof Grindau. Klein Grindau also shapes the area’s character with its distinctive settlement layout. Schwarmstedt complements the wider travel destination with its own cultural and historical themes.

Events, Music and Craftsmanship

The Heimatzoo Festival took place in Grindau in August 2026 as a two-day music event. The children’s program on Saturday afternoon included face painting, a magic show, creative activities and a bouncy castle. These program details refer to the 2026 edition; dates and content may differ in future editions.

DorfLebenGrindau e.V. organizes regular gatherings for shared leisure activities, as well as public cultural events and traditional village festivals. The cultural events include exhibitions and performances. Alongside the two-day festival, regular get-togethers and other public events are therefore part of Grindau’s event calendar. The range of events may change over time.

Grindauer Création offers another perspective: the atelier showcases handmade furniture and decorations from Grindau. Visitors can visit the atelier and find inspiration in its handcrafted creations. The music event, community cultural activities and atelier visit each offer a different focus when planning a stay.

The Settlement Layout of Klein Grindau

Klein Grindau is a former clustered village made up of three farmsteads. Later buildings from the 19th century give the village the appearance of a Rundling village. This Rundling-like appearance reflects the effect of later development, not the original settlement layout. The plots are shaped like slices of a cake, and all the buildings are oriented with their gables facing the center. Together, these features give the village a clearly recognizable center and a distinctive spatial arrangement.

Cycling and Hiking Trails at Hof Grindau

The Leine-Heide Cycle Route runs along the edge of Grindau village and passes directly by Hof Grindau. The Way of St. James is a different kind of route: this historic hiking trail to Santiago de Compostela also passes by the farm. Their different character distinguishes the cycling route from the historic hiking trail, while both have the farm as a specific point of reference.

The farm is also home to the 800-meter-long Paddock Trail, which offers the chance to experience horses in their natural surroundings. Its precise length makes the trail a clearly defined feature alongside the two routes, whose connection to Grindau is described by their course past the farm.

Schwarmstedt as a Wider Travel Destination

Nearby in Schwarmstedt, Harry´s klingendes Museum showcases and demonstrates mechanical musical instruments from their beginnings through 1920. The museum thus has a musical focus that differs from the two-day Heimatzoo Festival in Grindau: here, the emphasis is on historical instruments and demonstrations of how they work.

The Uhle-Hof is also part of Schwarmstedt’s cultural scene. Its history dates back to the 15th century; since 1986, it has been used for public and cultural events as well as weddings. On the grounds, a bronze sculpture depicts the 13 villages of the Schwarmstedt collective municipality as owls. The Uhle-Hof is also home to “Der Uhle-Boom,” a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege.

St. Laurentius Church in Schwarmstedt was first mentioned around 1150 in a deed of donation. Frescoes from the 15th century were uncovered in 1971/72; features include a baptismal font dating from 1528 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1608. These dates make the church another cultural and historical point of interest in the wider travel destination.

The farmers’ market at Rathausplatz is also part of village life in Schwarmstedt. It has been held there every Friday afternoon since 1996; farmers and direct marketers from the Aller-Leine Valley offer their products. If you plan to visit the market, check the date before your trip.
