Oldendorf offers two distinct highlights for your trip: the long architectural history of St. Martin’s Church and the Moor-Water-Forest Trail, with its nature and information stations. At the church, you can see evidence of different periods of construction and furnishing. The circular trail leads through moorland, past ponds and through forest. This places cultural history and experiencing nature side by side as separate themes.

St. Martin: Architectural history and furnishings

St. Martin is approximately 800 years old and is a single-nave fieldstone building dating from around 1200. The tower, about 36 metres high, is a landmark of Oldendorf. The dates of individual features reveal further historical layers: the altar and epitaph date from 1651, and the organ case from 1730/31. The interior, entrances and windows received their current design in 1901.

There is also a Romanesque feature on the outside of the church: a baptismal or holy-water font stands against the north wall. Together with the fieldstone building and the tower, it is one of the varied features that make St. Martin a cultural-historical highlight. If you are interested in church architecture, this offers a closer look than simply considering the age of the building.

Archaeological traces in Oldendorf

Excavations took place directly beside the Romanesque St. Martin’s Church in 2009 and 2010. A ground-penetrating radar survey inside the church in 2014 revealed the apse of an earlier building and crypts. These findings add evidence of earlier building structures to the architectural history. They also make clear that the history of the church site is not limited to its present-day appearance.

Another historical trace relates to a burial custom in Oldendorf: well into the second half of the 19th century, funeral crowns were placed in the graves of small children, girls and unmarried young women. For a trip focused on cultural history, the church, archaeological findings and this custom offer different ways to explore the history of the place—from architectural details to inherited practices of life and burial.

Moor-Water-Forest Trail: Circular route and individual sections

The Moor-Water-Forest Trail is an 8.5-kilometre circular route in total, with twelve experience and information stations. It leads through moorland, past ponds and through forest. Its interpretive content also includes climate protection. The route thus combines different landscape impressions with information, rather than focusing on just one type of natural environment.

You can explore the sections independently; the entire route is also described as a connected circular trail. Depending on the section, the trail is marked with coloured signs, and signposts direct you along the route. Benches along the way offer places to rest and views of nature. This information can help you choose between exploring individual sections and completing the full circular route, without assuming a walking time.

Trail conditions and planning

The Moor-Water-Forest Trail includes fords that remain from an earlier church path. The trail is not fully accessible: some sections lie within a nature reserve and include these fords. When planning your walk, you should therefore take this limitation into account as well as the distance. This information is especially important if you do not want to walk the entire route: individual sections can be explored independently, but this does not change the accessibility limitation.

The church and the circular trail offer different ways to shape your stay in Oldendorf: St. Martin focuses on architecture, furnishings and archaeological history, while the trail focuses on the landscape and its stations. You can choose the focus of your trip according to your interests and explore the specific themes of the place.
