Discover Altenmedingen
Accommodation in Altenmedingen
Altenmedingen brings together several themes for a stay: Neolithic tombs, medieval local history, St. Mauritius and surroundings shaped by extensive fields and the scenic course of the Ilmenau. Altenmedingen was first mentioned in a document around 1162. Historical evidence from different eras stands alongside today’s community life, with clubs and cultural events. When planning your trip, it is particularly helpful to distinguish between visiting historical sites and cycling around Altenmedingen.
Neolithic tombs in Haaßel
Within the municipality of Altenmedingen, the royal tombs in Haaßel form a group of three surviving megalithic tombs from the Neolithic Funnel Beaker culture. The tombs were originally part of a necropolis containing at least 24 tombs. The comparison shows two different scales: three tombs survive today, while the original complex comprised at least 24. Anyone interested in prehistoric burial practices will find a tangible connection to the Neolithic here. The royal tombs are open to the public without restrictions and can be included as a separate stop during your stay.
St. Mauritius: construction phases and visits
St. Mauritius Church dates to around 1200 and features architectural elements from different periods. The original rectangular nave was built of fieldstone; the chancel was added in brick in the 14th century. A Neo-Romanesque tower stands at the west end. The building therefore brings together different forms and materials: fieldstone in the original nave, brick in the later addition of the chancel, and Neo-Romanesque design in the tower. The church is also known for its impressive 14th-century altarpiece.
Visits are possible during services and events, or by prior arrangement. Brass concerts and community events are held regularly in the church. If you would like to visit, plan your timing around these options. For a concert or another event, it is advisable to check the dates in advance.
Cycling through Altenmedingen
The “Journey Through Time” cycling route passes through Altenmedingen and showcases half-timbered houses and St. Mauritius as part of the village scenery. This means you encounter the church not only as a building with different construction phases, but also as part of the local landscape along a cycling route. The tour can be shortened by around 12 kilometres in Altenmedingen. When planning your route, you can therefore choose between the longer route and an alternative reduced by about 12 kilometres.
Landscape, community life and accommodation
The surrounding landscape is characterised by extensive fields and the scenic course of the Ilmenau. Altenmedingen is a small municipality; clubs and village life are as much a part of its character as cultural events and tourist highlights in community life. This adds an impression of the municipality itself to the historical buildings and cycling route.
Altenmedingen offers visitors a wide choice of places to eat and accommodation. The offerings of individual establishments may change. When planning your stay, you can therefore take local dining and accommodation options into account alongside the sights.
