Hanstedt I is a compactly clustered village on rising ground at the northern edge of the Schwienau Valley. Here, historical landmarks meet a themed hiking trail and crafts at the HandWerkStatt. If you are considering Hanstedt as a travel destination, these different highlights offer concrete starting points for planning your visit.

Village History, Church and Mill Technology

Hanstedt was first mentioned in a written document in 1197. In the Middle Ages, Hanstedt was the seat of a Go court. The history of St. George’s Church also stretches back a long way: it is one of the oldest fieldstone churches in northern Germany, dating back to 980. Another historical connection is the former parish, which once included Natendorf, Barum, Eimke, Wriedel and Gerdau.

The Hanstedt Mill is located at the entrance to Hanstedt I. It was used as an oil and grain mill from 1368 and, with brief interruptions, remained in operation until 1981. All of its mill machinery has been preserved. Hanstedt thus brings together different aspects of local history: its early written mention and medieval judicial role, the fieldstone church and the mill’s long history of use.

Hiking Trail Through the Schwienau Valley

The 4.2-kilometer Resurrection Trail starts at St. George’s in Hanstedt I and leads to Ebstorf. Its route follows the Schwienau Valley through fields and woodland. Along the way, 13 stations feature images by a local artist on the theme of Jesus’ resurrection. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with a religious theme; its 4.2-kilometer length also provides a clear framework for planning your own hike.

The trail ends at Ebstorf Abbey. There, you can view the Ebstorf Map as part of a guided tour. When planning your visit, it is worth checking the current route and tour arrangements, as both may change.

Cycling Route and Nature in the Süsing

A cycling route leads from Hanstedt I through the Süsing to Velgen. Nearby, the Süsing is an extensive forest. Cranes, Eurasian pygmy owls and stock doves are regularly spotted there, although sightings are not guaranteed during a visit. The hiking trail and cycling route offer different experiences: the Resurrection Trail is defined by its stations and its route to Ebstorf, while the cycling route connects Hanstedt I with Velgen via the Süsing.

Crafts and Products

The HandWerkStatt includes a wool shop with yarn, knitting patterns and practical instruction. It is rooted in a family knitting tradition. Handmade one-of-a-kind items are also created there, using ingredients from the organic garden or from certified organic sources. This makes the HandWerkStatt another topic in Hanstedt I, distinct from the village’s historic character and trails.

Products include Heidekööm, a house-made herbal liqueur featuring heather blossoms from the surrounding area. The HandWerkStatt also makes certified organic bread from regional grain in a stone oven. As the local selection may change, it is advisable to ask which products are currently available before visiting.
