The Melzingen Arboretum and the archaeological remains around Melzingen offer different perspectives. The wider Uelzen travel destination broadens the picture with cultural attractions of its own.

Gardens and plants at the Melzingen Arboretum

The Melzingen Arboretum includes around 800 plant species from all over the world. You can stroll through the diverse garden at any time of year. Two botanical perspectives come together here: the variety of the plant collection and a garden walk that is not limited to a single season. If you want to focus on botanical themes, the arboretum offers a clear point of interest.

Cultural events and café

The garden also hosts cultural events. The program varies, so check the dates if an event is a deciding factor in your trip. The permanent exhibition “Ja damals” is housed in the Kulturstall. It displays tools used in the home, garden, and fields, illustrating manual work in earlier times. If visiting the exhibition is important to you, check access arrangements in advance.

The arboretum also has a café serving coffee or tea and cake. As café opening arrangements may change, check before your visit whether it will be open that day.

Archaeological remains around Melzingen

The area around Melzingen includes stone cists, sacrificial stones, cup-marked stones, and 80 burial mounds. Access to individual sites may be restricted. One specific point of interest is the Melzingen sacrificial stone: a large granite stone with a deep, man-made groove.

The stone’s dating is also interesting. Finds of two adzes and an axe indicate that the Melzingen sacrificial stone was visited between 2500 and 600 BC. The finds therefore offer evidence of visits during this period; they also make the stone a different historical topic from the tools in the permanent exhibition at the Kulturstall.

Maschbruch Nature Reserve

Maschbruch Nature Reserve lies in the Hohe Heide natural region. A ditch running through the protected area is a tributary of the Schwienau watercourse. Visitors should stay on the paths and keep dogs on a leash.

Cultural attractions in the wider Uelzen travel destination

In the wider Uelzen travel destination, the Hundertwasser railway station brings together art, ecology, and modernity. It was created as a project for Expo 2000 in Hanover and is one of the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The Path of Stones leads from the station forecourt into Uelzen town centre and includes 21 artistically painted rock sculptures.

Another cultural highlight is the Ebstorf Map at Ebstorf Abbey. It was probably created around 1300, measures about 13 m², and is considered the largest known medieval world map. From April 1 to October 31, the abbey offers guided tours lasting around 90 minutes, with explanations of the map. If a tour fits your plans, check the dates in advance.

Craftsmanship is another part of the wider Uelzen travel destination: At the Handwerksmuseum-Suhlendorf, a demonstration of a milling mechanism in the over 200-year-old “Auguste” post mill can be arranged by appointment. The cultural experiences therefore take different forms—from architecture and art in the urban landscape to an explanatory guided tour or an arranged mill demonstration.
