Vechta can be explored on two levels: the city offers the Zeughaus, the Citadel Park and a signposted circular route; in the district, the range expands to include hiking and cycling routes, moorland and other places. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: some destinations are in the city of Vechta, while others are in different places throughout the district.

The Citadel and Remembrance in the City

Three accessible floors at the Zeughaus Museum tell the story of the Bronze Age, the Middle Ages, the Thirty Years’ War and the more recent past, when the building was a prison until 1991. Numerous exhibits that visitors can touch and interact with add a hands-on experience to the historical themes. Next to the Zeughaus, the Kaponier is the only surviving fortification building of Vechta’s former citadel; today, it displays art from the region.

The memorial to human dignity offers another way to engage with history. It commemorates 88 people with disabilities from the district of Vechta who fell victim to the Nazi regime’s euthanasia murders. The memorial and the information there are accessible.

Hiking and Cycling in the District

The district of Vechta has 31 hiking routes through floodplains and moorland, forests and ridges, as well as to historic sights and natural monuments. They are marked according to the quality criteria of the German Hiking Association and consistently signposted. The Panorama Trail in the Dammer Berge is the longest route in this hiking network.

The cycling network covers around 870 kilometres. It also includes 16 themed cycling routes, among them “Discovering Aristocratic Estates” and “Art, Culture and Nature”. The Cardinal’s Way offers a different type of route: it connects Damme and Dinklage over 24 kilometres and is divided into five stations, or four stages. In Vechta itself, the signposted 5.2-kilometre Wedding Trail forms a loop through the Citadel Park and the Wedding Forest and along the Moorbach stream. The circular route and the longer connecting trail therefore differ in both length and course. Vechta railway station can serve as the starting point for the Vechta City Round Tour.

Moorland and Lake as Distinct Experiences

In Goldenstedt, the NIZ Nature Conservation and Information Centre, also known as the “House in the Moor”, offers several ways to experience the moorland: via a moor experience trail, in an underground moor tunnel and at the Moorbioskopion. A knowledgeable guided ride on the 11-horsepower moor railway takes about an hour and a half. The NIZ café serves regional buckwheat specialities such as buckwheat pancakes and buckwheat cake.

In Hartensberg Lake Leisure Park, visitors can swim in summer at a sandy beach and relax on spacious sunbathing lawns. There is also an 18-hole mini-golf course right by the lake. When planning an outing, you can consider exploring the moor, taking a guided ride and enjoying the lake’s seasonal offerings as different options.

Market and Other Places

The Stoppelmarkt in Vechta lasts six days. More than 500 showmen set up their businesses each year on the 160,000-square-metre market grounds. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific event dates.

The district’s other towns also add their own themes to the cultural offering. In Lohne, the Industrial Museum brings 200 years of Lohne’s industrial history to life for the public across 1,000 square metres of exhibition space. ArchäoVisbek offers insights into Visbek’s archaeology and history, as well as historical records and finds from recent excavations; the information centre was inaugurated in May 2018. At Dinklage Castle, Benedictine nuns founded St. Scholastica Abbey in 1949. Guests are welcome to attend services in the abbey church.

Choose the Right Focus

When planning your hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between destinations in the city and attractions elsewhere in the district: the Zeughaus Museum and the Wedding Trail are in the city of Vechta, while the NIZ is in Goldenstedt. Tailor your search to whether the focus of your trip is the city’s history and circular route or experiences in the moorland.
