Kirchlinteln: Cycling Routes, Heathland and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Kirchlinteln
Kirchlinteln’s landscape includes Geest hills, quiet stream valleys, and small areas of heathland and bog. It also has cycling routes with varied terrain and places where the history of nature and settlement comes to life. When planning your trip, it is particularly useful to distinguish between longer bike tours and shorter themed trails.
Landscape and Traces of the Past
South of Kirchlinteln lies Hügelgräber-Heide, a nature reserve covering around ten hectares. This dry sandy heathland is at the westernmost edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The area preserves 18 Bronze Age burial mounds, dating from approximately 2500 to 1400 BCE. Holloways bear witness to former trade routes. The heathland, archaeological remains and historic traces of routes give the area several distinct historical connections.
Cycling Routes with Different Profiles
The Aller-Heide Cycle Route is a circular route around Kirchlinteln, approximately 56 kilometers long. It passes through gently hilly woodland, bog and heathland. Another option is the Aller Cycle Route: this flat, bike-friendly circular route is around 55 kilometers long and runs between Verden and Rethem. Along the way, the landscape changes from marshland to Geest.
The approximate route lengths are similar, but the routes and terrain differ: the Aller-Heide Cycle Route is described as a loop around Kirchlinteln, while the Aller Cycle Route connects Verden and Rethem. On weekends and public holidays, you can shorten the Aller Cycle Route by crossing the Aller between Otersen and Westen. The solar-powered ferry Marie Hoffmann makes the crossing; it operates seasonally. Check the timetable before setting out.
You can also combine the Aller Cycle Route with a ride on the Kleinbahn Express heritage railway. The train runs from Verden through Kirchlinteln to Stemmen. Be sure to check the timetable in advance. The AllerCafé in Otersen is a rest stop on the Aller Cycle Route; its opening hours may vary seasonally.
Shorter Trails and Nature Themes
The Armsen Nature Trail is approximately 2.75 kilometers long. Information boards explain local natural and settlement geography. This gives the trail a different focus from the longer cycling routes: it offers insights into the natural environment and the development of settlements along a manageable route.
The forest playground is on the outskirts of Kirchlinteln. Its facilities include a zip line, a water pump, a watercourse, a slide, swings and a soccer goal. The Moorkieker in Kükenmoor is a regional play and cultural venue. Its themes include the regional significance of bogs, as well as animals, plants, nature and history. The two places offer different experiences: the forest playground brings together play equipment, while the Moorkieker combines play and culture with the theme of bogs.
Culture and Local Places to Visit
The Lintler Krug is a historic half-timbered building in Kirchlinteln and a regular event venue. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates of the specific events. This keeps your plans tied to confirmed dates rather than assuming there is an ongoing event series.
Other local places to visit include the Dorfladen Otersen w.V., a direct-marketing business, and Nordappel Mosterei & Streuobst, a farm shop in Kirchlinteln. If you plan to shop, check current availability, as it may change in retail stores.
