In Berne, you can include local history, nature and activities along the Weser in your plans for your stay. The sights and routes offer a range of experiences, from St. Aegidius Church to trails through protected areas, cycling tours and activities on the water.

Church and local history

St. Aegidius Church is a three-aisled Gothic hall church built of sandstone and brick. It dates from around 1240. Its furnishings also offer historical points of interest: the altar, dating from 1637, and the pulpit, dating from 1639, were made in Ludwig Münstermann’s workshop. The church thus provides a tangible insight into Berne’s architectural and artistic history.

The Breithof is another place with a long history. It served as a court site from pre-Christian times until the end of the 20th century. If you are interested in the town’s historical development, these two sites complement each other: architecture and furnishings take centre stage in the church, while the Breithof highlights its former role as a court site.

Nature reserves, walks and birdwatching

Warflether Sand and Juliusplate are nature reserves in Berne. In the Juliusplate nature reserve, the “Nature Tourism Route” is a hiking trail that passes information boards about the area’s natural significance and cultural history. These themes are connected along a specific route rather than being confined to a single viewpoint. Access conditions in nature reserves can change, so check them before your visit.

You can also walk along the dikes in Berne. Birdwatching is possible at Kiekpad. In Glüsing, a district of Berne, the Wesermarsch Stork Care Station looks after white storks. You can view the birds at close range by arrangement; contact the station before your visit. Berne’s nature experiences therefore vary: walks along the dikes, birdwatching at Kiekpad and a visit to the station by prior arrangement.

Cycling routes through Berne and along the Weser

For a cycling tour with an approximate distance, “Cycling by the Water” is a useful guide: this circular route is about 53 kilometres long and connects Berne with Lemwerder. “Water and Wide Open Spaces” starts in Berne/Ohrt, follows the Weser towards Lemwerder and passes Juliusplate and Warflether Sand, among other places. The starting point, direction and two nature reserves are the route’s key landmarks. Check the current route before setting out.

In Berne, you can also cycle the German Siel Route and the Weser Cycle Route. The “Stedinger Land” guided tour programme includes cycling tours led by local guides as part of the municipality’s tourism programme. In addition to the routes described above, guided cycling tours are another option; specific dates are not provided.

Activities on the water

Yachts and dinghies can anchor at the Juliusplate natural harbour on the Weser. If you are planning to arrive by boat, check the current harbour operations in advance, as conditions can change. You can paddle through the area known as the “Venice of the Wesermarsch”; no specific water route is indicated.

Swimming and fishing are also options during your stay. If you plan to swim in the Weser, check locally for verified water quality and DLRG lifeguard supervision, as these conditions may vary seasonally or otherwise. There are also fishing opportunities at numerous bodies of water in Berne.

Culture, museums and local traditions

The KulturmĂĽhle Berne offers a varied year-round programme of events, including theatre, exhibitions, concerts and readings. The KulturmĂĽhle association also looks after the preservation of the heritage-listed Wefer Mill. The local history museum in the municipality of Berne displays kitchen equipment, tools and everyday objects from the region dating from the past 100 years.

A seasonal event is the traditional winter cabbage tour, which offers a chance to discover local cuisine in Berne. Dates and specific arrangements may vary. Melkhus Schumacher in Berne/Ohrt is one of nine MelkhĂĽs along the German Siel Route. These different options may all be of interest during your stay: a year-round cultural programme, regional collections or winter traditions.
