Key attractions in Eckwarderhörne include the Preußeneck Upper Lighthouse, with its viewing platform and documentation centre, the green beach with mudflat activities, and paths along the dike. A seasonal ferry across the mouth of Jade Bay connects Eckwarderhörne with Wilhelmshaven. This gives you a choice of different priorities when planning your trip: lighthouse history, the Wadden Sea, activities on the water or a particular route.

Lighthouse and views of the Wadden Sea

The Preußeneck Upper Lighthouse stands in the dike at Eckwarderhörne and is 44.75 metres tall. After several years of restoration, the lighthouse reopened as an observation tower in 2017 and was made accessible to the public. Its viewing platforms are at heights of 18.40 and 34.50 metres. These two platform heights should therefore be distinguished from the overall height of the tower. The platforms offer views of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park. The structure and the views offer different points of interest during your stay: the distinctive lighthouse and the landscape of the national park.

Documentation centre in the engine house

Next to the Upper Lighthouse is the engine house, which has been converted into a documentation centre. Modern presentation technology is used to showcase the history of the lighthouse, the region and its times, as well as the cultural landscape history of Jade Bay and the Outer Jade. The topics therefore range from the individual structure to the history of both named landscape areas. If you are interested in the history of the lighthouse, the centre also covers its regional context.

Green beach and mudflat activities

Eckwarderhörne’s green beach lies at the southern tip of the Butjadingen peninsula. It is mostly green, with grassy areas. Water levels matter for activities on the water: conditions at the green beach are favourable for them at high tide. Guided mudflat walks are also offered there. The “WATT 4 Kids” mudflat walk includes using hand nets, shell experiments and observing lugworms.

A Jade Bay model to explore

At the flow table in Eckwarderhörne, visitors can use their own muscle power to set a water-filled model of Jade Bay in motion. Alongside spending time at the beach and going on mudflat walks, this offers another way to explore Jade Bay: here, you set the model in motion yourself. The flow table and coastal excursions offer different options for planning your day.

Dike paths and seasonal ferry

The “Meeresspuren” spa trail runs from Tossens to Eckwarderhörne and is 7.1 kilometres long. The “TOUR 07 – von Tossens nach Roddens” circular route covers 20.38 kilometres and offers views over the dike at Eckwarderhörne. The two routes differ both in length and in the way they are described: the spa trail leads to Eckwarderhörne, while the other route is designated as a circular tour from Tossens to Roddens. The Deutsche Sielroute runs along the dike through Eckwarderhörne in the direction of the municipality of Stadland.

During the season, Warrings shipping company’s MS Harle Kurier bicycle and passenger ferry crosses the mouth of Jade Bay between Eckwarderhörne and Wilhelmshaven. If you are considering the ferry connection when planning your trip, check the timetable in advance; times may change.
