Elsfleth combines maritime history with river landscapes and cycling routes. In the town centre, audio stations tell the stories of the town and its historical figures; at Elsflether Sand, the Weser and Hunte rivers, the beach and bird nesting sites create a different scene. Museums, a historical walking tour and various routes offer different ways to explore. When planning your stay, consider whether you would mainly like to explore Elsfleth’s history, spend time on the sandy beach or focus on a cycling tour.

Hear and discover the town’s history

The Elsfleth audio tour features twelve listening stations in the town centre. At each one, you can hear stories about Elsfleth and historical figures. The historical walking tour also covers important periods in Elsfleth’s history and historic buildings. It starts at the Black Duke monument on the Town Hall Square and continues with visits to the Heye Foundation and St. Nicolai Church. Tour dates are available on request.

The Unterweser Shipping Museum in Elsfleth is a modern, interactive museum with numerous attractions, including a ship-handling simulator. Haus Elsfleth is one of the three exhibition buildings of the Shipping Museum of the Oldenburg Unterweser region. It is housed in the former Villa Steenken and explores the diverse maritime development along the Oldenburg Unterweser in the 20th century. Opening hours are seasonal and may change; check them before your visit.

St. Nicolai Church connects the historical tour with a close-up look at the history of its construction. Expanded from a chapel around 1500, it was enlarged in 1633 and 1690. Together with the themes covered by the audio tour and museum, this offers more than a single way to explore Elsfleth’s past: you can listen to the town’s history, take a closer look at its buildings and learn about its maritime development through an exhibition.

Elsflether Sand between the Weser and Hunte

The Weser peninsula of Elsflether Sand lies between the Weser and Hunte rivers. Its expansive sandy beach is ideal for swimming and digging in the sand, as well as watching ships. Take care when swimming and be mindful of river conditions. Bird nesting sites are another feature of the peninsula. At Elsflether Sand, the beach, ships and nature come together—offering a different focus from the historic buildings and exhibitions in the town centre.

Cycling routes of varying distances

For a circular ride, the approximately 20-kilometre “Elsflether Sand” route crosses the Huntesperrwerk barrage and the Weser peninsula to Dreisielen. The return to Elsfleth is via the Huntebrück lift bridge. Another signposted circular route, “Marsch und Moor” (“Marsh and Moor”), is about 40 kilometres long. It starts at the quay in Elsfleth and passes through the half-timbered villages of Moorriem to the Gellen nature reserve, offering a longer route option. Both distances are approximate.

The Hunte Cycle Route offers a different kind of route: it starts at the Huntesperrwerk barrage in Elsfleth and follows the Hunte to Oldenburg. When planning, you can choose between two circular routes of different approximate lengths and a route with a specified start and destination. The right option depends on whether you would prefer a loop back to Elsfleth or a route along the Hunte.

The Wesermarsch as a broader travel destination

The wider travel destination of Wesermarsch is known for its marsh landscapes and cycling and hiking tours. Wesermarsch is characterised by 60 kilometres of Wadden Sea coastline and 90 kilometres of riverbanks along the Weser and Hunte. The Deutsche Sielroute is a circular cycling route through Wesermarsch that lets visitors experience marshland and moor, sluices, harbours and towns along the Weser and North Sea coast. Its flat route is particularly well suited to cycling with children or on an e-bike.
