Discover Jade: nature, culture and leisure
Accommodation in Jade
Jade offers a variety of experiences: nature and trails near Sehestedt, leisure activities in Jaderberg, and historical and artistic themes. Near Sehestedt, the Floating Moor and the Salt Marsh Experience Trail offer two different ways to explore the landscape. The Trinity Church, Schönhof Gallery and Jan Oeltjen Artists’ House association offer other points of interest. To help plan your trip, it is useful to consider what you are most interested in: a longer walk through the salt marshes, exploring the Wadden Sea, culture or leisure attractions?
Landscape and trails near Sehestedt
The Floating Moor near Sehestedt is a remnant raised bog in front of the North Sea coastal dike. A 150-metre-long boardwalk provides access to the moor. The Salt Marsh Experience Trail in Sehestedt is a different attraction: this five-kilometre circular route takes about one and a half to two hours to walk. These two experiences take different amounts of time: the boardwalk is a short access route, while the experience trail is a longer circuit. More than 30 information boards along the trail explain how the Jade Bay formed and give the route an educational focus as well as a chance to get active.
Another nature attraction is the National Park Experience Station. The laboratory container houses small aquariums where you can explore the Wadden Sea habitat using magnifying glasses, binocular microscopes and binoculars. While the information boards on the Salt Marsh Experience Trail explain the formation of Jade Bay, the aquariums and optical equipment draw attention to the Wadden Sea habitat. Information at the station is available from May to September; check the current seasonal arrangements before visiting.
Culture and history
The Trinity Church in Jade has had its present appearance since the late 17th century. Schönhof Gallery offers a different historical connection: it is housed in a Gulfhaus dating from 1872 and has an adjoining blue-printing workshop. The gallery thus brings together a building with a specific date and a particular craft. The Jan Oeltjen Artists’ House association adds an artistic focus to the cultural offering: since it was founded in 1991, its main focus has been the work of the artist Jan Oeltjen.
Leisure in Jaderberg
Jaderpark in Jaderberg offers a climbing and water world, numerous rides and opportunities to encounter exotic animals. Its leisure attractions differ from the landscape trails near Sehestedt and the cultural offerings in Jade. When choosing a destination, you can weigh these differences according to your interests: here, park attractions are the focus; elsewhere, it may be walking, nature or history.
The Wesermarsch as a regional setting
The Wesermarsch is characterised by 60 kilometres of Wadden Sea coastline and 90 kilometres of riverbanks along the Weser and Hunte. It is also known for its marshland landscapes, which are ideal for cycling and hiking. The German Siel Route is a cycling circuit through the Wesermarsch that lets you experience marshland and moor, sluices, harbours and towns along the Weser and North Sea coast. Its flat route is particularly suitable for cycling with children or on an e-bike. These regional features describe the Wesermarsch as a wider area, while the sections on the moor, culture and leisure cover specific attractions in Jade.
