Bastorf: Lighthouse, Riedensee and Farm Market
Accommodation in Bastorf
Bastorf offers three distinct themes to help you plan your trip: BUK Lighthouse, the landscape around Riedensee, and the offerings at the estate. When looking for a hotel in Bastorf, you can first decide whether a striking landmark, nature watching, or regional products matter most to you.
BUK Lighthouse and Riedensee
BUK Lighthouse is considered a landmark of the municipality of Bastorf and is over 100 years old. It is also considered Germany’s lighthouse at the highest topographical elevation; the tower itself is about 20.8 metres tall. These figures describe different measures: the metre figure refers to the tower, while the superlative refers to its topographical elevation.
The Riedensee nature reserve lies north of the municipality of Bastorf. Surrounded by reeds, the Baltic Sea lagoon has a natural, changing connection to the sea. Two observation platforms accessible from the beach are suitable for birdwatching. From there, the view extends across the lake to the Kühlung and Bastorf Lighthouse. As the platforms’ condition may change, check before your visit.
Beach access and trails in the municipality
If direct access to a Baltic Sea beach is important to you, the village of Kägsdorf offers this access to residents and visitors. Kägsdorf is a district of the municipality of Bastorf. The Kühlung terminal moraine, with forest hiking and cycling trails, lies southeast of the municipality. These offer different focal points for planning: Kägsdorf means direct beach access, while the Kühlung offers trails through forest landscapes.
Gutshof Bastorf: hotel, market and farm offerings
The restored estate complex now serves as an Ostseeland Hotel and holiday farm. The property includes two thatched barns, a main house and four outbuildings. The farm market is housed in a restored, thatched three-aisled hall house dating from 1820. Regional products and items made on site are sold there; the selection may vary by season.
The farm market’s fruit kitchen regularly makes jams and fruit spreads from regional fruit. The Mecklenburg oil mill at Gutshof Bastorf produces cold-pressed sunflower, linseed and rapeseed oils from organic seeds; the oils are available to take away. Availability may change.
The candy shop at the estate offers more than 40 varieties of fruit candy, including sugar-free varieties, as well as fruit gummies and liquorice. The specific stock may vary. Children and adults can explore the estate’s fruit and herb garden; there is also a children’s ranch.
Café Valentins is located right next to Bastorf Lighthouse. It serves homemade cakes and hot sea buckthorn juice; the menu may change. In the wider Rostock destination, the historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan; it is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast.
