The railway station and motorway church have different directions for getting there. Other cultural and historical attractions belong to the higher-level destination of Dummerstorf and should be distinguished from the places in Kavelstorf.

Getting there and finding your way

There are bicycle stands and car parking spaces at Kavelstorf railway station. No staff or mobility services are available there. If you rely on the parking facilities when planning your trip, check their condition in advance, as station facilities may change.

Kavelstorf Motorway Church is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can reach it via the Kavelstorf exit on the A 19; it is a five-minute drive from the A 20. The opening hours and directions give you two concrete points to help plan your day. Check the opening hours before your visit if you have only a short time window planned.

Village church, cemetery chapel and bakehouse

The small cemetery chapel is a few metres south of Kavelstorf Village Church. The cemetery was newly laid out in the 19th century, and a chapel was built there. In 2022, the chapel was renovated both inside and out. This makes it possible to view the cemetery’s establishment and the chapel’s later renovation as distinct periods in its history. The chapel’s location south of the village church also serves as a practical local landmark.

A reconstructed bakehouse has been in use on the Kavelstorf rectory grounds since 2013. The cemetery chapel and bakehouse are different local buildings, each with its own history of construction, renovation or use.

The Via Baltica and pilgrim stays

Near Kavelstorf, the Via Baltica runs from Rostock through Reez towards Schwaan. Pilgrims occasionally stay overnight at the rectory in Kavelstorf. Two specific details help put this into context: the direction of the long-distance route and the occasional presence of pilgrims in the village. Overnight stays at the rectory are described as occasional.

Cultural and historical attractions in the higher-level destination of Dummerstorf

The Dummerstorf manor house is located in the higher-level destination of Dummerstorf. It was built between 1714 and 1717 in the Baroque style as the ancestral home of the Mecklenburg noble von Preen family and is a listed building. Its construction period, architectural style and original function offer different insights into the history of the house.

An association opens the manor house’s two halls to the public for events such as concerts, readings and talks. If you are interested in an event, check the current schedule with the organiser. This allows you to distinguish the house’s historical significance from its present-day cultural use without assuming a specific event date.

Kessin, also in the higher-level destination of Dummerstorf, is home to St. Godehard’s Village Church. It contains a carved Madonna and Child dating from around 1300 and a carved figure of Bishop St. Godehard from the 15th century. The two figures represent different historical periods within the same church.
